Covering Console Holes! Any suggestions?
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:48:36 AM »
Alright! I have another question.  I have a bunch of holes on the top of my center console that Im tired of looking at.  I would like to cover the entire top of the console with some sort of thin, white plastic material, preferable UV stabilized and something that could be glued down. Im not sure where to look or what its called. Would a Marine Store carry something of this nature? If so what is it called?

Put a 1/4" sheet of starboard cut to the pattern of the top, radius the edges with a router, then use some oval head stainless screws with the finish washers to secure it, of course a small bead of silicone under it around the perimeter.  Then you'll have a whole new top to work with and mount whatever new stuff you decide (if any to put up there), thats what I'd do.

Skoot- profile says Largo,, if that's the Tampa/Clearwater area Largo, try Plastics America on Adamo drive. best prices I've found for Starboard. go there so you can pull from their "drop pile"- much cheaper. Just have your measurements of what you need.

Hi!

As Marc says you'll need to use screws, the starboard won't glue due to the wax inherent in the material.

Skoot, another option is a new narrower console.  :thumleft:

Marc, 1/4" Starboard sounds Perfect, I didn't realize it came that thin!

And lov2fish, yes I am in Largo near Tampa.  Thanks for the heads up on Plastics America.  Do you think they'll do the routering like marc suggested?

And Fernando, Trust me a new console will happen at some point, maybe a winter project :thumleft:

Any plastics place that cuts, can usually radius the edge for you, for a clean custom look.  leave the bottom edge square, and radius the top edge, would look great.  You probably know someone with a portable router...

Scott,  Measure the top of the console and let me know how big it is.  I have a left over sheet of 1/4" starboard that should be big enough that your welcome to.  We can even radius it if you like.

If you go the 1/4" starboard route, rather than Marc's suggestion with ovalheads and finish washers, I like to c/sink and use ovalheads...a lot less hardware to look at...

I think the real answer to this is to buy bigger electronics and mounting those will cover up the problems that started this
