How much
« on: June 07, 2012, 01:21:43 AM »
Hey everyone, you guys have been great but I have another question. I went and looked at two walkaround boats today and the lady asked me how much was I looking to get for my boat. My boat is a 1997 Aquasport 200 with a Bimini topped T-Top.  Nothing else extra except maybe a Raymarine A60 chartplotter, a VFH radio and a bait station located on the rear of the boat, which looks like a spoiler. The trailer has some rust but works well  She's not bottom painted and I've never kept her in a slip.

(Now the problem) The boat is powered by a 1997 Johnson SPL 115hp outboard that needs a rebuild. I've been running this motor for the last 2 seasons under 4000 RPM and with extra oil and it's been just fine.  However, how much would you reasonably pay for this boat?

I have a couple projects going on at this time (all documented on this site) but nothing real serious other that the motor.  I use her as a family fun boat in the Delaware River and I fish mostly in the Barnegat Bay and right outside the inlet  So, once again, what price could I reasonably request for this boat without just giving her away?

How do you know if the engine needs a rebuild? They usually don't run very long if something is broken...

2 years ago, some junk got sucked up into my engine, which overheated. I'm not saying its related but while the mechanic was fixing the head gasket, he told me that at least one cylinder had low compression.  That's when he told me to run under 4000 and used more of the x50 2 stroke oil than usual.  So that's what I've done and she's ran pretty good. Of course I don't know how long this will work but since I've already paid to have this engine rebuilt, I am unwilling to rebuild it again.

I really like this boat but I would really really like a walkaround. I especially like some of the older model Aquasport and Seaswirl boats.  I actually looked at a Seaswirl and a 22ft Wellcraft yesterday.  My family boats with me a lot and my wife is on board with me getting another boat as long as its a walkaround (you know a head and a cuddy area for her and my daughter). I would really like a walkaround boat for December striper fishing in the barnegat bay.  My current boat does well but at some point, I'm gonna get wet.

Anyway, thanks for looking and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Flat Back...

Look at the stern picture, the bottom of the boat is about as flat as the kitchen floor.. Good for running in skinny water..

FB- Flatback - these are pre-72 Aquasport models with near-zero deadrise.  They are highly regarded for their classic lines and ability to go in skinny water.  A updated/restored flatback will bring boatloads of money for the right person in the right market (think Tampa).

Thanks for the clarification.  I talked to my boat mechanic about what I could reasonably expect to get if I sell my boat and he said about $3500.00 due to the engine problem.  He doesn't sell boats but he works on them full time and he worked at our local (closed down) marina for years.  I was actually thinking in the same ballpark.  Sobering thought when I think about how much money I've already put into my boat but a friend of mine reminded me that I've gotten a whole lot of fishing and family fun out of that little boat.  I think it's getting decision time.
