Fishbox hinges on 215DC Osprey need repair
« on: June 06, 2012, 10:49:38 PM »
Hi.  The hinges on my fishbox lids on the deck of my 215 dual console Osprey are in need of repair.  The side of the hinge that attaches to the deck are secure, but many of the screws that attach the hinges to the lids themself are loose, missing or stripped.  When looking at them, there seems to be some special hardware that I am not familiar with.  The screws seem to screw into some metal thread inside the fishbox lid, then there is a flat washer on the underside.  It also almost appears that the screws are cut off (they seem very flush with the washer.)  Can you tell me the name of the screw/thread combo I need to buy, the size, and whether or not I will need to saw off the end of the screw after I tighten it down, and if so, with what tool?   I have some pictures in the photo gallery.  Here are the links.
Thanks, Dave

They are bolts that thread into tapped (female) circular plates. Except for the one that is a forked-up big screw that bonds to air.

On the one goofball....drill through the whole mess and use a stainless bolt, big flat washer, and locknut.

On the rest, if necessary (threads stripped and won't tighten)....use 3/8ths inch longer bolts, and locknuts to cinch down against the existing plates.

EDIT: Last sentence for clarity.

We called them "top hats", can't remember their official name.  Contact a good SS supplier like Fastenal, they'll know...

"Top hats" sounds good. Thick, circular, tapped flat washers. Got the job done... quality production.

Nope, Scott, imagine a top hat.  Tall in the center, flat and wide on the bottom.  The center part, of course, threaded, 10-24...

The drilled hole was c/sunk on the backside to accept the top hats.  The "top" of the top hats was serrated so it would dig into the glass and bite.  Then the machine screws were broken off so they were flush and no protruding hardware stuck into the space...

Mr. Todd Biddeson got these into WC/AS, he of Biddeson Boats and Marine Concepts...

Gotcha. Just like a female T nut, as used for the back side of a coaming pad install....but with an inserted "hat"

Shrewd...hat's off to Todd....and reckon back then, the "top hat" was made in some foreign trade zone...like Milwaukee.

Back in the early 80's...I spoke with Mr.Todd Biddison...and sold some boats (six Biddison 22's) for him up here.

The Biddison 22....layed out just like a 230C Sea Ox (no wings on the WAC)....user friendly from the helm to the bow.

Nice ride. Ahead of it's time.

That is what I did on mine. Believe I was able to remove the threaded insert. Better yet, after removing the insert, top hat, barrel, T or whatever, epoxy the holes and re-drill to the correct size for the fastener you decide to use. Where/when/ever possible, through bolt connections on a boat perform the best due to vibration.

Just my drift.

I think the reason they used the Top hat nuts is to prevent interference with the lip of the deck.  If you use a nut you will have to be sure it doesn't hit the deck when you close it.  Looks pretty tight to me.
