Where are the numbers?
« on: June 06, 2012, 04:56:16 PM »
I have a beat up aluminum prop on my 1996 Yamaha 200 Salt Water Series.  I can't find the numbers on it- are they somewhere on the inside?  The prop is currently mounted on the motor.
Thanks, Dan

should be inside the hub facing aft.  A washer, crud or grease could be covering them.

So on the part where the washer and castle nut tighten down onto it?

Doubt there.  Most prop sizes are cast into the prop when molded, almost always on the exterior surface of the prop body it self, not the blades.  The numbers just may not be there any more, but you can get close on diameter by simply measuring from the propshaft center to the blade tip and multiplying by 2.  And it's not along the blade, it's perpendicular from the blade tip to a line drawn straight out from the end of the shaft to where it intersects the line from the blade tip straight down...

Are you experiencing any particular issues that you feel a different prop would solve?

There definately aren't any numbers stamped on the outside of the prop hub.  I have a couple of spare props from a different motor so I know where that are supposed to be....Maybe the one on the motor is a cheap generic with no stamped numbers.  Anyways, Bob I have no idea if there are any issues other than it looks like someone tried digging quahogs with it and I wanted to start researching what size would be good for my setup.  A friend of mine has an extra prop or two so I wanted to start looking into prop dimensions and couldn't find the size on the dang thing.

Having said that, what would be a good starting point for a 1978 22 Family Fisherman, modified V, with a 1996 Yamaha Saltwater Series (Carb) 200hp 20" shaft?
Thanks, Dan

What was the max diameter on those motors, 15"?  Start with a 14 1/2 X 17.  Gets you close on the dia with a mid-range pitch...

I run a stainless 13 3/4  x 17 . Ran the same prop on my 225 yami Exel and now on my 200 SW 11.
Great hole shot, turns 5500 rpms w/o throttle.
My FF is a deep vee tho, you might be able to get by with a little bigger prop

My buddy's got one that's 15x17 so I'm just gonna try what's on there for now but it's pretty beat up so I'll also try the 15x17.  Free is for me!  Are the 90's carb motors propped the same as the newer 4 strokes as far as the fit of the spline and the depth of the hub, diameter, etc?
Thanks, Dan

Bondobill,
I was hoping you would weigh in, but yeah I've got the mod V hull so I guess we'll compare notes.  If I can get a day off one of these days I'll be able to do a couple of final tweaks and get the thing in the water for a shakedown cruise.  I'm aiming for this Saturday.

I have had a couple of props from OMC motors over the years that the part number was on the hub but I don't remember if it was on the front or the rear.  If you can't find the number on the outside it's worth the effort to pull the prop and look.  They should be pulled and the shaft greased once per year anyway.

I've had several props that the part numbers and size were cast inside the hub.  Ones that I have had re-pitched had them stamped on the outside of the hub.

Well I took it off today and I'll be damned if I can find any size numbers anywhere.  I guess I'll put it back on give it a try, see what happens....

Not all manufacturers stamp the hub. You may find the numbers on the thrust washer side since it's hubbed for Yamaha. I have seen props with no numbers. Got a "Big Iron" that has only a 25 stamped on it very faintly. It acts like a 24 so they could have called it a 25 pitch.......

Thanks for the replies.  I could only get 4600 out of the prop at WOT so it looks like I'm going to have to play around with test props until I get it right.  Are the splines the same on a 96 SW Series compared to a newer 4 stroke?  A friend of mine has a 15x17 that came off his F250.  Will that fit my motor?
