Removing Boot Stripe
« on: April 08, 2006, 04:31:35 PM »
I am working on a 1987 170 rebuild (will post pics soon) and am wondering the best way to remove an ORANGE boot stripe?
I plan on priming the hull white and painting it white after I get it off, or some of it off.

Thanks

Easy Off oven cleaner will work without attacking the gelcoat.  Follow the safety precautions on the label.

I scraped it all off with the blade of a razor knife. Just be extra careful not to scrape the gelcoat. (Learned that from experience).

If it's a tape stripe, a single-edge razor blade scraper works best.  If it's painted on, try the Easy-Off oven cleaner method, or you can get some fiberglass paint stripper.  Most of these are tape, which is pretty easy to get off with the scraper.

For the tape, a hair dryer helps soften the glue and makes the job a lot easier.  A heat gun will work of course but it is possible to damage the gelcoat or fiberglass with the heat gun.  A hair dryer doesn't get hot enough to hurt anything.
