Tachometer Problem need help
« on: May 30, 2012, 09:31:07 AM »
I have a 161 tournament with a 90HP Johnson on it. My Tech  wil not 0 out, it is on 1000 RMS with everything off. Removed tech to try to correct with no luck. Is there a fix for this? What do I need to do to 0 it out? Also would anybody know what the tech setting should be on? There is a setting selector on rear of tach. I changed it trying to correct problem and I do not know where it should be set to for my engine. It has pulses or cyl choices.

Thanks for any help

I think I found information for the correct setting, I believe it should be 6 pulses, I did not put it back in the boat yet. Waiting for someone that might have more info to reply to my post.

I'm not sure of the setting but I'm betting a Google search will help you.

FWIW my tach on my 200 Evinrude didn't always zero out. I'm thinkin' this is not a rare occurrence and ain't nothing to really worry about but then.....

I'll let others comment on that. Personally, I think you're fine if the tach worked correctly while the motor was operational.

It's not unusual for boat tachs to read something other than zero with the engine off.  They often just stop where they stop.  The key is that they read correctly when the engine is running.

The analog tach on my 170 reads 1k when the motor's off.
