Tilt Trim Switch

Can a tilt trim switch be replace on the throttle handle of a 98 245TM.It only works going down.I thought it might be a relay but it works at the back of my 225hp Evinrude.

But you might want to take the binnacle apart first.  You might fine a broken green wire (up) that you can splice back together...

Thanks again Bob.I copied the diagram and parts list.Now I have to see about taking it apart.Will let you know how it works out.

Can you check the continuity of the switch back where it plugs into the motor?  I just did this to confirm that the switch was functioning.  Also, I thought that green was down and blue was up? (Blue=Sky, Green=Grass)

You can usually fix the trim switch if you don't want to replace it.  Most of these trim switches have a metal case with the contacts inside.  You can carefully open the case and inside you will find a spring, contactor, and two contact points.  Clean up the contactor and contact points with some fine emery, give it all a squirt of WD-40 and put it back together.  Should work like new!

That's my thought and current plan of attack. :thumleft:

Haven't had the opportunity to mess with an OMC switch, but I know Yam's are potted...no fixing them...

Even with the potting you may be able to pry it out with a carefull application of heat, if it's broken you can't really break it anymore.. What could POSSABLY go wrong?? :mrgreen:

Yes, you can soften the potting and dig it out...then try to get the contacts cleaned and prepped for a new solder joint...

I'd buy the switch, easy-peezy swap...

I have a Yammy on the 230, won't trim up from the helm (does from the engine sw) took the cover off the helm handle and that was as far as I could get - looks potted.  Tried to take the binnacle cover off but looks like the PO took the head off 2 of the screws so I can't get the binnacle cover off to get the binnacle off  :cry:
I figure the wires to the switch are landed somewhere in the binnacle (like I saw on the OMC diagram posted above) but it doesn't matter - can't get to it.  Took it to the mechanic - he ordered another sw.  Don't know how he's going to get it out - that's why he makes the big bucks: those tricks and tools.
Also I had a problem with my new gauges - the Tach seemed to work ok, all parts of it but the speedo didn't, showed voltage but nothing speed wise.  He checked it and said that the part (pitot) on the lower unit was plugged, don't know how that could have happened  :roll:   Oh well, an easy fix at least.  I'll get the boat back sometime next week.
Thank goodness I have another Aquasport to fish out of this weekend  :cheers:

Rick,
There are 4 black machine screws holding the binnacle cover on.  If you have to drill off the heads because they are stripped...well, that's what you have to do.  Just had a Zuke twin binnacle (basically the same as Yam) that had 2 screws buggered up...had to do the same to get the cover off...

Once you get the cover off, and the binnacle pulled out, removing the handle, taking it apart, and swapping out the switch is a piece of cake...
