Boat engine upgrade help
« on: May 23, 2012, 11:17:45 AM »
Im hoping everyone can give their 2 cents about this one.  I am looking at a really great deal for  a 22 foot center consol I think a CCP but I'm not positive. Currently I own a 1986 19'6 osprey with evinrude 115. The 22 has twin 80's but one is broken. My thought was to purchasete 22 and upgrade to that and switch the motors. My question is 2 part.
1. Would a single 80 horsebe enough for the 19'6?
2. Would a single 115 be enough for the 22?

Thanks so much for everyone's help I'm supposed to look at it today do I will letu know more about the 22 this afternoon.

I'll throw in my .02, I think in both instances they would be under powered, the biggest impact would be on the 222 especially if it is a CCP, the CCPs have a steeper dead rise for a better ride, hence they require a little more engine to get on plane and maintain, the 115 would struggle to maintain that, most 222 have around 200 HP (+/-) a little.  The 196 would run out ok, but would probably be a pig with a full load and/or some challenging sea conditions.

There was a 70s 222 on CL up here with an Evinrude 115 four stroke that was listed as a comfortable 25-30 mph boat.  There was another 222 with a 90 that was listed as "good for evening cruises".   :?:  :drunken:  Answer really depends on how you intend on using the boat... Low power equals low speed, lighter loads, no hair blown back and bugs in your teeth (they will fly faster then you will go..) and not necessarily better fuel efficiency at planing speeds.  If you want to do a little skiing, tubing, cranking out to the schooling blues, the there is no replacement for displacement..

Do you have the option to fix to other 80 or is it really broke?  An option is to also look for a good deal on another boat with the engine you want and then swap those motors..

You really need 150 on a 22 foot CCP.  You can get by with 100-125 on an Osprey with the 12 degree hull, but the CCP has a 20 degree hull and is at least 500 lbs. heavier.  Twin 75s or 90s would work OK on the 222CCP, but twin 115s or 130s are ideal.  A single 250 is a nice setup, and a single 200 was the most popular original power.
