Fuel Tank Hatch on 222 Sandpiper
« on: May 21, 2012, 09:52:55 AM »
Hello all, noticed my fuel tank hatch was just a bit soft this spring so I decided to remove it and recore it. The rot wasn't too bad. As I started to try and chisel off the old wood fron the skin I noticed someone applied the plywood with construction adhesive to the skin and I can not budge it. I tried everything and I don't want to damage the skin. Any thoughts on where to go from here?

X2 on the grinder. Use a four inch one so you can get into the corners easier. 36 grit flap discs don't clog up like regular ones.

A grinder it is. I was just concerned that may be a little too powerful and cut through the skin. ANy idea why someone would use construction adhesive???

Skip the grinder - cut the glass off the back side with a circular saw set at about 1/4" and then use a pry bar with a good sharp edge and a hammer as needed.  Just pry the wood off the skin.  It is usually not a single piece, but is squares of 1/2" marine ply.  Use the search engine above and you can find a couple threads for others who have done a tank cover recore.    :thumleft:
