Thanks guys, but unless a really good deal comes along Im more than likely going to run my Tohatsu until it dies. Personally I prefer 2 strokes, but I'd also be happy with a Yamaha or Suzuki 4 stroke.

Thanks for posting about the 140 Suzuki. I was gonna ask you when I saw your mention of it in your signature.

Its not a very common motor around here, this is Yamaha country. I am strongly considering this motor for my 20 proline. I am interested mainly in dependability and fuel economy, not big top end speed.

Seems like its Yamaha country everywhere.  Nothing wrong with the engine at all, but Yamaha sure does have the lions share of the market.  First time boat buyers see so many boats pre-rigged with Yamahas, so I guess they think they're supposed to have one too.  Dealers have a hard time selling any other brand

Suzuki, Yamaha, Mercury, are all great motors. I dont think there's a wrong choice here.  All are equally dependable, Fuel efficient, etc, etc.  Find a motor in your price range with a dependable service center and your set.

I have a 140 Johnson with a 13 3/8x17 SS prop on a 1986 19.6 and it seems like a nice combo. It's got a decent he shot with 4-5 men and gear. It cruises around 3800-4k at 28-30mph and at 5500 is closer to 40. I am keeping a eye out to repower but with gas prices vs performance. I have to say after reading this string it's gotta be a OptiMax 200.  If I were you I would maybe try some diffrent SS props to see if that helps. They can be had pretty cheap on eBay and sold back or kept as a back-up. I too am on a budget and I have to hold back on the reins to make sure when I move it makes sense all around and long term. Good Luck Buddy
