Hey Bob. I’m sure you used a flaring tool at some point. Did the one you used, have a round over grove in the face of the flaring washers? Or was the one I used a not a normal flaring tool for drain tubs? Since I’m going to make one, I want to make one like dealers use. Like I said my friend couldn’t remember where his came from.  :thumleft:

I have access to a lathe and was planning on turning a small grove in a really thick washer that will roll the drain edge .. The drain that came out was not rolled, it was just flared so I hope that a rolled edge will do exactly what you said about holding the sealant.

For what it's worth, the shop that did the whaler has a tool that rolls the end and they put an O ring under the rolled lip...

A member "rented" a flaring tool from Marine surplus here in Bradenton Fl to do his.  I'm sure he paid a deposit and they mailed it to him in CT.  Might think about calling them before you re-invent the wheel, so to speak.

What Rick said.  When you're are only going to be using this tool twice, why not see if you can rent one?  Love Autozone, the rent is free!  Pay the deposit, get your money back when you return!

I agree, but I love doing things myself. I’ve always got a price on having a job done. Then bought the tools to do it myself.  Cost me about the same as having it done. But I end up with the tools to use later on other jobs. That’s how I built my tool collection.

I think the rolled flare is better. If 5200 is used, it will do a job like an oring. But will bond to the hull and the underside of the flare. I shouldn’t have said the other tool won’t work. It will but will form a flat flare. that will push the sealant out. Just like gluing to boards together. Put just the right amount of pressure and you get a good bonded joint. Put to much pressure and you push out the glue. Leaving you with a weak joint. Different flares are used to do different jobs. Using the right flare, is the best way. Just like brake line flares. You wouldn’t use a single flare but a double flare. Both look the same, but work differently.

Also I don’t think I’m always right. Hell I’ve been wrong a lot in my life  . But I like to think I’ve learned from all the times I’ve been wrong.  :thumright:

That also what’s great about forums like this one. You my not have to go through a long learning carve. You can get the info you need, from people that have already gone through that learning carve.
