Drain plug ?
« on: April 26, 2012, 07:44:20 AM »
I am installing a new drain plug in the hull, It's brass and will be sealed with 5200 to the hull, but it didn't come with screws, would it cause any issues to use stainless screws with the brass or should I use brass :? ...I don't have a lot of faith in brass screws...They just seem to strip out to many times to my liking..

Well, considering that 99.9% of all garboard drains are installed in this manner, I'd say you'll be alright using SS screws.  The application of 5200 in the mounting holes sets up a barrier between the dissimilar metals...

You'll be fine with stainless. Why?
Well every plug I've ever used has been brass attached with stainless fasteners and I never had a problem so it must be right.

The real truth is that brass and stainless are fairly close on the galvanic metal scale and thus have a lower tendency to create the reaction that would cause one to erode faster than the other due to galvanic corrosion.

You choose which answer works best for you.

The real key here is the condition of the media surrounding the hole. That's the most common place for failure.

Good luck.

EDIT: I see SB beat me to it. :thumleft:

Thanks for the input Seabob and Capt.Bob....The main reason for asking was the old one had brass screws in it, and I don't trust brass screws...As far as the media around the hole, the transom is solid..After removing the old drain, I even ground out a little glass and put some new glass with epoxy over the hole then redrilled the hole...I put marine tex on a finger and ran it all around the inside of the hole to make sure nothing could get wet in the hole, will seal the drain in with 5200 and use the same on the screws as well, I know probably overkill, but I don't like to make my own problems if possible
