1987 19'6" project...
« on: April 22, 2012, 10:29:36 PM »
Hey guys, new to the forum, not new to projects.  Just purchased an '87 19-6 for $250, and she is rough to say the least.  No power, no trailer rotted deck, rotted transom, has poor patch in the forward hull, stringers shot, and a hole from a poor patch in the forward deck.  It's going to be a chore, but I'm up for the challenge.  I will be posting pics soon

Yeah, gotta love Craigslist...I take it you saw it?  I am thinking about doing something very similar to your boat.  Do you have bigger pics on here?

Hey 1987196,

Welcome!

You took the cap and inner liner out as one piece? How did you break the floor to stringer bond? Was the floor so rotten that it broke free without having to attempt to cut the adhesive? Do you plan to remove the coring from the floor and rebuild the core and reuse the original inner liner with new materials and re-gelcoat the original floor?

I've always wanted to see if it could be done and save a ton of work.

Yes I took it out in one piece.  It is not the first time.  I must say that it is much easier in a boat of this age.  I have worked for two boat companies(Regal and Proline) and in new boats separating the two is a PITA!  I personally would not do it any other way.  This boat had really taken a pounding and that probably helped in the disassembly.  Yes I will be keeping the original floor and re-coring from the underside with divinycell.  My "brother from another mother" is a regional sales manager for Regal and I fortunately I can purchase materials at cost through him.  My plan is to rebuild this and be able to pass it to my children with no concern for the integrity, so I will do it all in composites.

wow ive never seen pictures of someone taking the cap off one of these.. Good luck on the build be sure to take lots of pictures.. i take it the transom was pretty bad since the inner glass came out with the cap.. On a side note, gotta love them regals, my parents have had theirs new since the late 80's early 90's.. that thing has taken us some places, such a well built boat IMO

Since you have just an A frame, how did you get it to lift out? I think I see some come-alongs but its hard to see.  So, do you crank one end and break that loose and then the middle and then the other end?

I built the a-frame around the boat, and used ratchet straps and a comealong.  The a-frame is midship and I lifted from the bow light hole the midship cleats and the stern pie hole.  The bow came apart easily.  The stern not so much.  I had the boat essentially hanging from the mentioned lift points and then took a wood wedge and hammer reached in to the stringer through the stern pie hole and pounded the wedge between the deck and stringers till it popped.  Once it was all free I set it back down for the night.  Today was very pleasant temperature wise but was a bit too windy in my opinion to attempt to lift the deck clear of the hull.  Late this afternoon I built a frame to lift the deck from a single lift point.  I used 2x6's from inside the bow hatch back to the stern cleats, then across the top to the midship cleats.  This lets me lift from a single point and use straps to steady it.  Pics next...sorry for the pics at night, it finally calmed down enough to get a little work done.  Better pics tomorrow...

Transom lifted a resting on 2x4 for the night

They were kind of difficult to deal with.  I have a little time between being a full time student/stay at home father of two.  I like your boat, basically what I am planning.
