Louvered Doors - For Sale
« on: April 18, 2012, 10:00:52 PM »
For anyone interested, I make custom handcrafted louvered doors using Teak or Starboard (white or black). I have made many of these doors for my friends on other boats like SeaCrafts, Makos, etc. Quality is excellent, and prices are reasonable. With 30+ years of woodworking experience, I love to restore old classic boats and am willing to help on yours. Below are a couple of examples of my work. Post up or email me if you are interested in a quote on your specific requirements. Thanks, Jim

Seagate,

Thanks for your interest, but I'm not sure of the size or configuration of the cabin doors on a XF200. Could you give me the dimensions of the door(s)and post or email me a picture.

Thanks,

Jim

Man, you do some pretty work!
On my 222 the console door is missing the knob that fits over a small splined screw. I have been trying to find a new knob made out of teak but am having no luck. Is this something you can make or do you know where to find one? I have found them made out of everything but teak.

Slvrlng,

Thanks for the compliment. I take great pride in my work. The Teak doors are just a little side business.

I have a LOT of Teak! Maybe I can fabr up what you need. Why don't you draw up what you need and email it to me. Bigpipe911 at Gmail dot com

Jim,

Curious what you're using for glue?  Finishing up a reconstruction of the historic folding bench seat in the back of my 246CCC and decided after exhaustive research to use the traditional marine product called resorcinol (product name Cascophen from Aircraftspruce.com.  Supposedly after more than half a century in production, it's still the most resistant to water and UV, and actually has impressive holding strength when compared to epoxies or poly based glues.

Also curious where you source your teak, although I think I did notice that Martin's doors were Ipe?

That said, your work is beautiful!   :salut:

Ryan,

I don't use any glue in my doors. They are totally mechanically fastened together. I use dovetail joints and SST set screws to keep everything tight and prevent any movement and resulting splits in the joints.

Yes, you are correct in that Martin's Doors were made out of IPE. I buy both types of exotic hardwoods from East Teak located here in South Carolina. They are a HUGE Importer/Wholesaler of exotic woods from around the world. I have to buy a lot of board feet to get a good deal though.

Good luck with your project, sorry I couldn't offer too much advice about gluing Teak. It is hard to glue Teak and have long term good results, that is why I resorted to "traditional" mechanical joints...

Jim,

Your work is superlative.

If you'd like to price another source for exotic wood, send me a PM. This firm supplied the teak for the re-decking of the battleship USS North Carolina, berthed here in Wilmington.
