I guess one could wire in another but why?

I put one on my 215 Explorer. It's neat. Finds satellites fast, even in the garage. Speaker is loud. Screen is easy to see. Seems like a great radio to me. Having backup gps/nav is worth the $50 or so more it costs than a regular radio.

I haven't had a chance to try and navigate with it yet.

Depends on how you are going to use it.  If you hook a DSC radio up to most chart plotters it will plot the location of boats in distress or even your buddies boat if you have his MMSI number and other neat features.  But I'm sure you can still hook this one up to your chart plotter and the internal GPS is a nice backup.

It will do all DSC features without the need to hook it up to external gps. Tracking, sharing, etc. You can enter waypoints to navigate to as well. It will hook up to an external gps, but I can't see why it would be needed.

I have the version that connects to the GPS unit.  Very nice.  Standard has been highly recommended by a lot of people for their quality.
