Lewis, that Meridian has the Zeus system, doesn't it?  Mercs answer to Volvo IPS.  Would love to drive one of those...

Like Volvo's IPS, can actually turn the drives to 90 degrees at docking speeds, literally drive the boat sideways.  Dock a 39 footer in a 40 foot spot...not that I'd want to try that, though...

I drove a Sea Ray 44 a while back with the Zeus system - was not that impressed.  It works, but the one on that boat was not very smooth - it tended to be a bit jerky compared to what I would do with throttle and trans.  I might work good for someone new to operating a bigger boat - you don't have to coordinate 5 controls - just use the joystick and the boat goes where you point.  If I was a professional Captain and ran the boat like the Zeus on that boat, I don't think the owner would keep me around long.

Haven't had the opportunity to drive either the IPS or Zeus.  IPS was out quite a bit before Merc answered, and that SeaRay may have been an eariler version.

I will say this, though.  Should you strike an underwater immovable object, whereas a pice of gear is going to get sacrificed, well, it's going to be a lot pricier on a pod drive than a straight inboard/V-drive, but, in theory, you shouldn't hole the hull...in theory!
