Yamaha gauge replacement
« on: March 31, 2012, 10:41:04 AM »
Received the new gauges for the 230 and now it's time to replace the old.
As expected, there are some differences in the wiring even though Yahama says they stayed the same.

Anyone know where to buy bullet & snap connectors? Seems I need to join bullet connectors together, some with a bullet connector coming in from each end and some junctions look like I need to join 4 together.
Here is the old and I'm not going to pull them apart until I find new connectors.

I've looked at radio shack and a couple others to no avail.

X4 on Autozone...

Rick, no big deal to pull out all the bullets and swap out your gauges now.  Since you just have a single engine, match up the colors once you get the new gauges in.  Yellow is ignition power, red is power from the engine, black is ground, green is tach signal, blue is backlighting (wire that to the nav lghts, which it looks like yours is already wired that way), white is the fuel sender lead...

I wanted to replace the junction connectors - they're 20+ years old.  Went to the auto parts place and they had bullets and snaps but not multiple snaps.  May have to try to clean up the old.  The gauges both have the bullets (male) and have to connect to each other....

Yep, Yams been using those 4-way female bullets for like forever!  Have never seen them anywhere, but then I've never really looked.  Have you googled them?

Rick, just did, these look kinda cool...http://www.jhps.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Sc ... y_Code=ELE

I saw those on another Brit website too.  I used the old ones.  I did see that the bullets will almost slide into a 10-12 butt connector

So I got the old out and think I had the wiring recorded well.  I connected

The old gauge had a white/blue to pink in the bundle and new only has white, so I assume this is the sender.

I turned on the batteries and key and 1) didn't see any smoke  :D 2) saw some nice clear displays
It's about to rain here so I had to button it up real quick and really didn't get to study what I was seeing.  One thing I did see is that the trim is all the way up to the top with the top segment blinking. Not sure if that is correct but I do have the motor trimmed up quite a bit.  Will have to wait until I pull it out of the driveway to see if it is correct.
Also saw that the fuel is down to 1/8th       That's going to be an expensive bill @ about 120 gals.....

Pics will be posted later today.  Going to neighbors for a beer.

Here are the gauges - always nice to receive goodies  :06:

Speedo wires

The wiring off the Tach which is the feed for the Speedo

The back of the Tach - for CB at least

Installed

I have to button up the inside tomorrow - cleaned up the wiring a bit and cut out some of the long service loops.  Will start her up also and see what the tach reads, etc.

Rick,
Check your trim sender on the motor, you know, the little spring loaded arm that travels up and down, just aft of the steering cylinder under the lower pan.  Move it through it's range (if you can), observe the gauge.

That is the main issue with Yam THT indicator problems.  At what they want for the sender, forget about it and just turn around and look...

I'm pretty sure that it was working on the other gauge though
I'm going to climb back in there this morning. Any idea what color the TnT wires are in the bundle?

The old tach had a connector that had 2 wires only.  The new gauge has 4 wires in the connector.

I found the TnT lever and the engine is not even close to it, so the gauge is probably ok.  When I can get my wife out there I will check to see if it varies.

There is an issue using the new gauge with an older engine, I had the same problem on my 96 225 on the Chris craft when I put a new gauge in.  There is nothing wrong with your trim sender, the harness as it is, is incompatible with the new gauge.  I think there is a fix for it, but as  Bob stated, I didn't worry about it.

Here is a post on THT about it,

Lowes sells the bullet connectors - look in the electrical aisle.
