I'm pretty sure that it was working on the other gauge though
I'm going to climb back in there this morning. Any idea what color the TnT wires are in the bundle?

The old tach had a connector that had 2 wires only.  The new gauge has 4 wires in the connector.

There is an issue using the new gauge with an older engine, I had the same problem on my 96 225 on the Chris craft when I put a new gauge in.  There is nothing wrong with your trim sender, the harness as it is, is incompatible with the new gauge.  I think there is a fix for it, but as  Bob stated, I didn't worry about it.

Here is a post on THT about it,
http://www.thehulltruth.com/marine-elec ... new.html#b
My wife watched the gauge while I moved the TnT lever - still flashing on the top segment.  :(
The post on THT said that the engine the guy had, had a 3 wire trim sender.  I'm not sure what I have but I know there is a setting on the gauge to switch it from 2 wire to 3 wire.  It was factory set to 2 wire. The old gauge didn't have that switch. Maybe I'll try switching that. Ought to be fun getting to that switch now that it's installed - it's recessed deep into the back of the gauge under a rubber plug.

Ahh, the little "dip switches"...

Well, that didn't work - any ideas SB?
Started the motor and the tach works, the oil level seems to be right, the Batt V on the Speedo seems to be working, albeit a little high.

After some research on Yamahaoutboardparts.com I found out that I should have the Trim sw set to 3 wire. After a little digging I found that if the top bar is flashing it means that there is a bad trim sender or a short in the wiring. Oh well.

Like I said Rick.  Want to know where the motor is?  Turn around... 8)

My gauge hasn't worked for five years now, turning around is a habit now, even do it on my pops boat and his works.

I'm pretty sure the trim worked on the old gauge so I figured it should work on this one...
Trimming up and looking back, for me, just tells me I'm trimming up, doesn't help me start to figure out the consistant best efficiency, etc.  With the trim gauge you can set it to +3, for example, set it at the same throttle to get the speed that is best.  Otherwise it's a trial each time, and I do understand that different seas affect all of this.  Another way I tell how I'm trimmed is where the spray is coming off the boat - in front of me is not as good, right beside me is good, behind me is...

I also can't tell if the gauge back lights are coming on - I hooked blk to grd and blue to blue, and traced the blue to the "Panel lights" sw.  Can't tell in the day though.

Rather than start another thread, I'll just resurrect this one.

Like Fearless Leader and other Yamaha digital gauge owners, I too suffer from the dreaded LCD display "burnout". The older model Yamaha used a combo tach/trim/oil gauge. It was later superseded with the digital gauge Rick shows in this thread. I had trouble locating this gauge but was able to locate the older (original) gauge in Canada.

Original (on right) and "new" replacement

Connections are almost the same.

I'm not sure why but the gray wire connection in the Molex connector isn't in the "new" gauge so...

Wire removed and in place in "new" gauge.

Hopefully the weather will lighten up for a short period this weekend and I'll see if time has damaged the LCD readout.

You're not supposed to bleed when you're changing gauges
The "new" one does look identical. Do you remember what the gray wire was used for? I don't remember if my old one had the gray on it.

Dag Cap you need some Super Glue in your tool box!  That stuff is great for keeping sliced skin closed up when band aids won't stick.. I go through a lot of both!

I'll have to get some super glue as dburr suggests. <!-- s:thumleft: -->:thumleft:<!-- s:thumleft: -->

The gray wire appears to be a ground for the temperature sensor switch (gleaned from FP's THT posted link and my wiring schematic). It ties into the speedo gauge. Appears to trigger the overheat light. I do know mine lit (in the speedo) when the motor overheated a while back so I figured I'd hook it up. Your old gauge does in fact have it. It is identical to my original. It may not come into play if I ever replace the speedo gauge with the newer model. I have not been able to find an original but as you know, the newer one (what you now have) is available. At this time though, I don't need to do that.

"New" tach.

LCD display seems to work well even after 20 + years of living in a box.

Indeed but...
The gauge indicates a +1 trim but in reality, the motor was trimmed down completely. I'll need to see if there is any mechanical adjustment in the sender mounting. If not, I'll just trim and note new position shown as a base.

Hopefully this gauge will last as long as the original. That way it will long outlive me.

I have not been able to find an original but as you know, the newer one (what you now have) is available. At this time though, I don't need to do that.

Well I never quoted my own post but...

I did indeed find an original speedo multi gauge on e-Bay.
Previously, Icemanbryan sent me his old (but newer model) speedo. I had trouble wiring it up and was going to try and replace the LCD screen in my original gauge with the one from Bryan's but the screens are different so....

I couldn't let a long obsolete, original equipment gauge slip by and snapped it up. After installing it, a quick check showed the LCD screen readout was nice and bright but the gauge panel light didn't work so...

I took my original sun stroked gauge apart and here's what I saw.

I took the tiny light bulb out (socket is in center of pic) and sure enough, when I opened the e-Bay gauge, it was missing the bulb.
Inserted the "old" lamp in the "new" gauge and voila.
So now I have replaced both of my original gauges with "new" (not hardly) obsolete ones. I still don't believe I found these things.
