Snake Eye Lights
« on: March 28, 2012, 08:35:41 PM »
Anyone with Snake Eye Lights: how far from the point of the bow did you place yours? I just purchased some with the intention of mounting them far enough aft that I can through bolt them, but given where the liner is, I dont know if there is room. I would prefer to have them consealed forward of the area where the anchor rope normally is but I dont know if that is too far forward or not. Ideas, measurements, opinions...

Thanks!

love2,

Here's a good test. Take a couple of small LED flashlights, and tape them to the hull at the points you were considering.

Turn them on, in the dark.  Walk back 150 yards or so, and move around. The main thing is safety, you want the other guy to see you, and see you easily.

Get the placement to your liking, the install will follow from there :thumright:

We used to have the same issue with docking lights.  Where the will actually shine once they are screwed/bolted in place.  Keep in mind the 112.5 degree requirement...like the coasties are actually going to dig out their extrapolation protractors...

Yep.  The CG has started slamming boat manufacturers for incorrect light viewing angles.  Apparently there are thousands of new boats out there that the lights do not meet the rules.

love2, Bob and JJ's observations would direct us to place the lights well forward.

Post up some pics after the experiment. Tx.

In reality, and I can't find the statute, but I know it's out there, "shark eye" lights mounted below the shear are illegal, per nav rules...

But I really think it's all about a "bad donut day" on the part of a water cop...

Gonna pack some extra donuts I guess... not exactly the "legal way" but I did a google search for similar styled boats and got a ballpark idea where they had their lights mounted, roughly wired mine up last night and found they are visible to more than 3/4 of the way back on each side. I think the recessed part where the light is helps reflect fore and aft... anyway, here we go:

L2F,
Have an Action Craft 2110 here at the house right now, let's compare...

Want me to go out and measure?

And yes, it is a little Owens & Sons trailer gathering there, side by side... :salut:

Thanks Bob, sharp looking boat! I've seen that guy posting a lot on THT, ( I think i recognize it from his signature). Mine look a little forward compared to that boat's.

Oh, and if you have an extra one of those owen's trailers- lemme know! I'm looking for a new trialer.

Yeah, that is flatout71's Action Craft.  He lives in Westchase just N of Race Track.  Excellent dude, and really DOES know his chit!  She's getting quite a bit of work done to her...

Yeah, I doubt one would ever measure the angles.  Most water patrol guys don't know the regs as well as most people on here.  All they know is that the lights work or not.  Maybe some know which side should be red.

I have seen more than one boat with the lights reversed.

just went to take a picture but the neighbors lights are messing up my camera. You can see the red reflecting onto my yard from the back corner of the boat. I think I'm good.
