Gas Filler Hose on 222CCP
« on: March 26, 2012, 12:00:20 PM »
Has anyone actually replaced one.  It's foamed in completely. I knew that and that's why I tried to splint the hose but that didn't work so..

I have a pie plate in the deck and have managed to get the hose free all of the way from the tub to where it turns up.  By removing the filler hardware, I have managed to free about the first foot from the top.  That still leaves at least 2 feet behind the rod holder tubes.  The rod holder tubes don't leave enought room to cut out for another pie plate easily and I think it would probably take 2- 4" to get the rest of the hose loose. If I have to cut out for two, I'm considering cutting a section out like a trough but that's going to be fun because of the rod holder tubes.  I know someone is going to say they want pictures and I respond by saying I want to know if someone has actually done it.  Thanks for any ideas.

There have been a few removed. The foam has been a bear. It is like glue.

Try taking some big wide jawed vise-grips and twisting the hose to break the foam.

As Bob alludes to...its a bear. That foam is ultra-sticky...just getting it off your hands is time consuming.

Some of the members have tried come-alongs in the past. Not model-specific either. They are all a be-atch. The clamps are old and rusted shut. The rubber is melted on to the fill over thirty years of summer heat. Any lube is now rock hard.

Try to remove it as the members have removed foamed-in tanks in the past. Be patient. Use a come-along. A thin blade machete is a good tool too. Any mechanical bond that you can get to/cut/break with a knife/etc. is a plus.

Yep Bob, I knew it would be a pain so that is why I tried that beautiful splint.  Unfortunately, the original part of the hose is bad.  Actually, I have it all broken loose but a foot after about an hour this morning.  I did get enough fuel in the tank that we are going to try to fire up the motor tonight.  Thanks for the advice gran, I'm going to just keep working away at it.  Like any other job, looks insurmountable at times but eventually there's an end to it.  Just thought if someone else had done it already, I wouldn't try to reinvent the wheel.  I used a piece of 1 1/4 X 1/8 flat bar with the top bent at a right angle this morning.  It worked pretty good. I dodged this bullet once before on a 17 with the splint approach.  Not this time. Can't use a come-along or vice grips 'cause the hose is too rotten.

Keith,

I have the same boat and was telling myself that I will eventually have to go through this.  If you will, post some pictures of the job as well as the tools used.  That will help all of the CCP owners when their time comes.  Hope it goes well :thumright:

SUCCESS! Will get some pictures up later next week with some dimentions.  Had to cut a place for another 4" Pie plate near the deck.  Lot more digging with a large screwdriver and bent flat bar, then prying and twisting and finally movement.  Had to cut the hose in half in the deck cutout and pull it out in two pieces.  Used the large screwdrive and drove it through the hose on an angle and "prysed" against the bottom rod holder tube to pull the hose out.  I'll enlarge the hole before I put the new hose back in.  The hose is roughtly 5'8" long so I'm going to get 6 feet of hose.  What a job! Sore fingers and a healthy assostment of cuts and bruises but is is out.  Yea!

Thanks guys!  Hey Bob, back in 96 I was, ah, well, ah, maybe,ah....don't remember.

Fired the motor up last night.  It didn't take much.  Idled beautiful but wouldn't run right when you opened it up.  Gonna have to pull the carbs and clean them.  Should be fine then.  Really started easily. New water pump worked fine though.

Yea Seabob, and it couldn't even talk back, although there was a time or two that I spoke to it, knowing full well that it couldn't respond.

Way to go Keith!   :salut:   Replacing that CCP fill hose is a major PITA!

But you won't have to do it again for 30 years or so, and it will come right out next time!   :thumleft:

Now let's go fishin!

Well that's a start. It ran fine the last time I took her out but that was back in late 2009 (Nov. I believe) and it never ran again till now.
2010 is still a blur to me but let's hope it gets you out and back on that first trip. That will strengthen my belief that fuel consumption aside, those old 'Rudes were pretty reliable. Now if the motor is as tough as the original impeller, you'll be good to go. 8)

Good luck but.....
