22 Family Fisherman storage ideas
« on: March 25, 2012, 09:32:12 AM »
I'm getting close to getting my boat rigged with engine, controls, batteries, etc.  I'll be starting from scratch so I'll be able to set things up the way I want.  One of the things I would like to do is keep the deck as clear as possible so I'm looking for any input for storage options so I don't have the batteries, oil tank, etc. on the deck.  I've seen some pics of Bondobill's setup in the FF Registry thread.  Bill if you see this, I'd be very interested in some pics of the deck hatches you installed and how you have the batteries set up.  I also plan on getting rid of the well that was in the stern when I bought the boat and building some type of hinged or removable bulkhead just forward of the engine so the kids don't fly out of the boat when I get on the throttle!  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Got some photos for ya.
Aft hatch access to oil tank, bilge pump, wash down pump, and fuel filter

I believe it is a Bowmar, opening is 19" x !0'

Same size forward hatch accessing rear of forward hold, on mine the hold extends back underneath floor about a foot and a half

Battery's,switch, and trim tap pump

Location behind lip @ door to cuddy

I don't know if the guy who did the work for me had to cut the top section out of the compartment for install of wiring and reinforce the compartment because of the weight of the batteries, it might have been that way from factory. Screwed and 5200 in the supports.

Starboard side of forward compartment

He ran the wiring to the stern between the port side stringer and tank coffin
I had this done about 15 years ago and so far so good, no issues

Bill, thanks so much.  This is a huge help.  I was wondering how to get the batteries up forward and how you had them supported.  I felt like there was some extra space between the tank coffin and the cabin but I didn't want to cut the deck blind.  Now I've got your pics to guide me!  Only difference is I have the modified V hull but up forward like that its probably close to the same.  I like where you put the oil tank.  I was thinking of putting mine under the port side deck near the transom with a similar deck hatch.  Do you know how much space there is between the stringer and the side of the hull back there?
Thanks again,
Dan

Not near enough room for a tank if you are talking about outside the stringer to the hull.
Even with your modified vee you should have more than enough room to install your oil tank in the same spot I have mine. I will measure my clearance from the top of my 3 gallon oil  tank to the underside of the floor.

Thanks Bill.  It looks like it is mounted on a plywood platform?  Is that glassed into the bottom of the bilge?  I'm really interested in that space forward of the tank coffin and I can't figure out why Aquasport didn't make use of it from the get go.  Great spot for the batteries to get them off the deck and get some weight forward.

Measured  clearance in the rear hatch last night. About 14" from center keel to bottom of floor. I have about 2" of clearance from oil cap to bottom of floor, probably have 1/2 to 3/4" additional space to bottom of hatch. I am thinking with your modified V you won't have room to put a 3 gl Yami oil tank under there.
Forward hatch is 15" deep, 7" of clearance top of battery's to bottom of floor.
Also does your center hold in the cuddy extend back under the floor of the cock pit, my does about a 1 1/2', that's where I installed the battery's.

Bill,
Thanks for the reply.  My computer was in the shop for a couple of days so I haven't been online.  Something about too much Aquaporn?  But anyways, I'm confused about the 14" from center keel to bottom of floor measurement.  Can you describe what you are calling the center keel?  I'll try to get some measurements to compare.

Regarding the center hold in the cuddy, mine ends at the bottom of the entry hatch into the cabin.  I was confused about what that tub was that your batteries are sitting in, but you're saying that it is the floor of the cabin extended a foot and a half back from the rear bulkhead of the cabin?  Just wondering why Aqua would do that unless it's not factory.  It looks like your deck has been replaced or at least resurfaced.  Maybe something was changed when that happened or was this factory?

Also, what did you do, scew your fuel filter into the stringer?  Looks like I can see it sticking down from the top of the photo.  I was thinking of installing a deck hatch vertically in the port stern and getting it in there somehow.

I think what I am going to do initially is replace my stern inspection plate with a nice big hatch like you did and re-evaluate oil tank placement in there.  For the battery I'm just going to mount a single battery box to the deck in the stern where there already was one, get it running for now and then figure out the forward hatch/battery option later.  I really like the idea of having the batts forward to help distribute some of the weight away from the stern.
Thanks again, Dan

Bill, is that area that you have your batteries accessable from the cabin?  Was it for a porta-pottie to slide out of the way?

That forward hold where the batteries are is accessible from the cabin. The compartment starts up forward in the cabin and extends under the floor of the cockpit about a 1 1/2', has a drain hole in the back were the batteries are located that drains into the bilge, Looks like it came that way from the factory. In the cabin the compartment  has a bifold  3/4" teak board that opens for access to the compartment .

Curios
Floor is original, I've had the boat since 90. When I had engine well removed instead of trying to match the nonskid on the new section of floor in the back I sprayed the floor with truck bed liner. As far as my measurement in the rear compartment I measured from the center rib dead center in the keel to the bottom of the floor.

Hey Bill,
Check out the link to the 246 FF in the Compartments and Bilge thread here.  That battery storage area of yours looks like a storage area for the portable head when not in use.  Mine doesn't have it.  Are you sure you don't have a 246 FF?

Nope she is definitely a 22, Can still see the ghost imprint on the hull of original sticker, 222 Family Fisherman.

Might be they only had the compartment on the deep vee hull
