Teflon Tape or Thread sealer

Took my gate valve off because it was stuck and now that it's freed up what do I put on the threads when I put it back on ?

I don't like teflon tape on anything other than brass fittings.  Sealer w/teflon has always worked better for me.

Not that there is anything wrong with the tape if used properly but 90% of people do not know how to apply it.  Wind it on backwards and it doesn't seal well.  Overlap the end and little pieces of tape can get in the pipe.  That doesn't hurt most things but get a little piece of tape in hydraulics, a carburetor, or an ice maker and there is a good chance it will screw something up.  Regular old iron pipe is not used so much anymore but tape was never a good sealer for that.

All done, I was very surprised how easy it all came apart, also bought a set of the wooden plugs and tied them in the bilge.

Scott, just curious...what "gate" valve are you talking about?

Maybe seacock is the better word for it, the one for my livewell and wash down.

The Bosworth Sea-Lect valve (diverter) in the tackle center.  Actually, that's not a gate valve nor a ball valve.  Never mind, glad it came apart easily.  Those things can freeze up and become useless over time...

Nope, I guessed wrong, that is the valve on your pickup.  Now THAT is a ball valve...

Groco has a nice feature that Conbraco or Apollo don't have, that little square hole in the handle, allows you to insert a 3/8" ratchet in there for those "stubborn" handles you can't seem to budge with your hand...

You know when that thing was in the boat it wouldn't budge, as soon as I get it out it moved, don't know if wrenching it loosened it up or maybe I just had better leverage.

And that pie plate I put in the fish box, like what Pete did on his boat, made this job ALOT more easy, I wouldn't have been able to snug it back down without it.
