New here and new boat?
« on: March 11, 2012, 10:03:19 AM »
Hi everyone - this is a great site, I have been a lurker for a while, mostly dreaming about my next boat. I sold my last one when my oldest boy was born 5 years ago. The opportunity has finally presented itself again and I have a verbal agreement to purchase a new one on Friday - and it is an Aquasport!!

It is a mid 80's (i think) 170 with solid floor and transom, allegedly. It has a 2005 double axle trailer, and 05 Yamaha 70 hp. 2 stroke with less than 50 hrs. New steering and gauges at that time. It was winterized and in the barn for the last 2.5 years.

One issue that it may have is that the current owner was concerned about ethanol when he purchased the new engine and has been running a remote tank since then. I would like to go to the in hull tank but am wondering what he protocol for checking it out is. I tried to search the forum but was unsuccessful in finding a thread dealing with cleaning a tank.

As long as the engine runs I will be picking up on Friday - here is an old picture of the boat - can anyone tell the year from this??

Welcome aboard!  The last two numbers of the HIN will give you the year..  Can you find out when the last time the under deck tank had fuel in it? What is the concern with ethanol that the PO had/has?

I'm not really sure - maybe he was concerned that the ethanol would dissolve a bunch of crap and mess with the new engine? I also don't know when the last time gas was added to the tank - a would guess 2005/6.

Thanks - I will know a lot more on Friday. I think I am getting a pretty good deal on the package - $4K so even if there are some issues (as long as they are not major mechanical) I am ok. I am buying from one of my good friend's brother in law and the boat has been in their family for at least 15 years.

If the old tank doesn't leak then your OK if you don't run ethanol.  His concerns with ethanol in the old tank are probably well founded.  Ethanol is a strong cleaner and it would loosen up all the years of built up varnish in the old tank clogging up the fuel system.  As long as you don't run ethanol in the tank your OK.
