Bob, what's your opinion on the cushion grip? Think it may give trouble down the road?

Sounds like a wheel that a jeweler would use...So you don't hurt your soft hands....

I'll get a pic of the one from MCL, you can send it to them if you like it, I know they have more.  The wheel is nice and thick, easy to grip.

MCL dug up an Edson almag wheel, satin finish, exactly like Matt's pictured above.

CHEAP!!

They said if I wasn't 100% happy....send it back for a full refund.

Those guys are great to do business with.

Thanks to all, will photo it when it arrives next week

PS. It doesn't have the rubber grip. Will need to use Jergans.

Alrighty, here's what's shakin'

Our trusted friends at MCL had one 13 inch Edson wheel, with speed knob. It was blemished. They said check it out, if you don't like it, send it back. These guys do biz the old-fashioned way....gotta like that :thumright:

It is a 2007 Edson Almag wheel. Aluminum-magnesium casting. Made in USA, old-fashioned sand casting. You can see the grains of sand imbedded in the casting. Very fine indentations of course, but you can see them...actually aesthetically pleasing.  Beautiful color/finish on the satin Almag.

So it gets here, and just as shown in their pics...there are several areas of discoloration. Almost white against the light silver. Turn the wheel another way, the areas are darker...weird

I'm befuddled. Called my metallurgist cousin...he has a quick explanation..."White Rust".

He explains that this is due to latent gassing from the Almag casting/reactionary surface corrosion.

Called Edson tech support. They verify the gassing aspect of the casting, and potential discoloration. They had good suggestions. A product called "Never Dull"...and believe it or not....toothpaste. The toothpaste has imbedded light pumice.

Used both products tonight. The discoloration has been minimized, but still shows. I can spend $150 on bead blasting with aluminum oxide grain, then chem stripping to remove the old anodizing, then re-anodizing, plus shipping, back and forth to Miami. And no guarantees as to an as-new product. Edson advised against it, due to the magnesium in the casting having a reluctance to accept a second round of anodizing.

I could live with it...or return the wheel to MCL.  Or spend 300 more bucks, and go with the new production Edson in satin-finish stainless with the rubber grips beneath...as recommended by Edson.

But not in Almag. A new 13 inch Almag is no longer available.

The Almag is cool...old school and classic. Warmer to the touch in cold weather...fits your hands beautifully....and will never show a trace of rust.

Here is the Edson website:

WWYD?

What Would You Do?

Thanks
