Badge Installation
« on: March 04, 2012, 10:01:05 AM »
I'm having new badges made for my '72 170 (thanks Wingtime!) and the samples I got don't have holes for the rivets and actually look really clean without them. It got me thinking about just gluing the new badges on rather than riveting them back on (which I've never done...) as originally installed. What are the pros and cons of using an adhesive to attach the new badges? If adhesive is a viable option, what should I consider using for the job?

As far as problems, the only one one can think of is possible wave action from running in the ocean (entry)

Heck yea, go for it. I'd use clear RTV silicone, the stuff they bed gaskets with. It has more adhesive than regular silicone. Hold it on with blue painter's tape 'till it sets up.

This is right up Lew's alley, he may know of something better.

The guys making the badges use 5200.  Scuff up the back of them first to give the 5200 something to bite into.

You don't have to use rivets, my 170 badges are screwed on.

Thanks for the advice, guys! I've worked with 5200 some (when installing my Folding T-top foot-bases) and since that's what the badge makers recommend, and I have some already, will try that. I'll let you know how it works. Meanwhile, the sample badges that wingtime's office suite-mates made using my original look good an appear sturdy. They sent me a sample set they created and colored teal, based on the more recent accent color they saw AS using. Wingtime is working with them to develop the right shade of dark green, and when I get those I'll mount them on the 170 and report back here.

Check with flkeysaqua on the Resource forum. Think he lists his e-mail there.

I contacted flakeysaqua last summer about making the 170 badge but he balked when someone told him he could get sued. That's when wingtime put me in touch with the guys in his building, who make replacement Mako badges and other boat accessories and are are using my 170 badge example to make a digital "mold" to have on hand to make badges for other 170 owners. You should contact them and see if they'd be willing to make 19'6 badges -- if someone can get them a sample: KentonSams@uniquecabinetryinc.com

Yeah I emailed flkeysaqua a week or two ago, and didn't get a response. I thought there might have been another source somewhere, but hadn't been able to track down the thread I was thinking of; may have been mixing and matching threads- its been a few beers since then.

I have 1/2 of one side of my 19-6 badges, so definitely not enough for a mold. If anyone knows of someone making them, or has any they'd like to sell, I'd be happy to take them off your hands. I'll try posting in the resource board and maybe I can track down one as a sample for a mold. Thanks guys.

Dan, you're right, I remember that discussion about a possible lawsuit.

Lewis has a new set of 19-6 badges he may could loan to Bruce's buddies.

Good link Bob.

Guys I had a set of these made....but not as large as the ones shown here. They are exactly the same dimensions as the original.

They are beautiful, great high polish, super workmanship.

The font style on the lettering is VERY SLIGHTLY different....not an issue, but I'm anal and notice little stuff like that.

Should not be a problem for them to do a 19-6 set, if they haven't already.

They are right much more than the plastic ones. You will need to call them for a quote if you are interested in a set, or PM me and I'll tell you how much they were.

The ones my neighbor are making are CNC cut out of a white acrylic plastic with a vinyl film for the color on top.  They make bunches of them for the Classic Mako guys.  But since the edges of the Aquasport badges are beveled they take much longer to machine than the Mako badges.  They are tweaking the CNC program to get them just right.  They plan on making 19-6 and a 22-2 badges as well.  Just need to see one.  I was planning on getting a close up pic of Skoots 19-6 badge at the gathering but the weather prevented that.

I have or at least had a xerox copy of my original badge. If you think it will help I can root around and try and find it. Let me know.

Thanks for trying, wingtime. It's refreshing to know up here in OH-IO that even you guys down in FLA suffer weather setbacks this time of year...

Any color advice you can give the Boat Help Shop (www.BoatHelpShop.com) guys is appreciated; I just want to have dark green badges to glue on in time for the 170's "coming out" launch at the end of the month down your way in Pine Island. Been working on her for the better part of two years for the occasion!
