I picked up all the stuff today from WM. Taking the wife out for out first time on the boat tomorrow, and then Friday I'm going to clean it off and see what kind of condition it's in.

Good stuff  :thumright:

Sorry to hear about the screw up, Scott your right you can't gel over the stuff, paint yes but that's not what you want on a new console.

I can 5200 to it though right? The guy at WM suggested I check the transom after I take out the old plug and clean the hole, just to make sure that I really do need the marine tex - otherwise, skip it and save $40.

I was suggesting the marine tex to fill the stripped screw holes.    He's right when you remove the old plug clean the hole and get a look at it.  You want to make sure water does not get into the core.  Keep in mind bare polyester fiberglass will adsorb water and of course an exposed core material will. If all is good put some 5200 on you finger, stick it in the hold and smear it around to seal it up.

$40 for marine tex     at most all you would need is the little bottle that should be under 20 bucks, I get it for 13 here.

It depends on how bad the holes are wobbled out, if not bad you could get away without it but if the fitting is turning it's wobbled out enough, plus it will be a longer lasting job if you use it  :salut:

I missed the $40 for Marine tex     I just bought the small box of it for $11 at my local Ace hardware marine section.

Amen to that, the only time I shop at WM is if they have it in stock and I need something that day or the next, any other time I order off the great www. :) Like it was mentioned earlier, feel the hole for wetness and such, when dry put some marine tex on your finger and coat the hole good to seal it and fill the screw holes...

I splurged and bought the medium size Marine Tex in the box. 14 oz I wanna say. The 2 oz was freaking $20, and I figured I would use it again for something...

Alright, here are the pics. The small holes must be where it was originally mounted, and the ridiculously large holes were the new ones. No surprise they didn't hold the plug since they were drilled too large. In any event, I'm thinking letting it dry for a day or two and then using the Marine Tex after all. What's the best way to get it into the small holes? Should I drill them all out just a bit first? The inside was dried with paper towels, the outside and and inside of the hole while moist, seem to be in good condition for after drying. I was deathly afraid that there was going to be wood that had rotted making the screws useless, and I'm unbelievably happy to see that's not the case. The transom is going to look so much better with the addition of a shiny new brass flange.

I agree. That's why I'm wondering if I should drill the holes out to really stuff the Marine Tex in them. And if so, is all that going to cure in a day? Guy at WM said that in most cases, regular 5200 is cured in a few days... But since this is going to be a crazy amount of Marine Tex, is it safe to figure about 2-3 days for that? I'd like to drill the holes out, stuff it full with a punch or something, blend it into the hole to form a circle where the screws went through the edge of it, and then after a few days of it drying, use the hair dryer like you all recommended. After that, throw on some 5200, put the flange on, screw it in using the areas that haven't been used yet, and call it good after a half week or so of drying.

Thoughts?

A great way to get the stuff in is to use a syringe and some O2 tubing.  You can get the stuff form your local pharmacy (although they look at you real funny when you tell them what you are doing  ), or you ask the folks at your local ambulance service for some of the old nasal canula tubing and a 10cc syringe.  Then drill the holes out to fit the tubing (although they look big enough now!?!? Some people should just not own boats.....) Mix up the MT, spoon it into the syringe with the tubing cramed on the business end, shove the tubing into the first hole till it bottoms then shoot then MT in slowly until it comes out around the tub.  Then strart to slowly pull the tube out as you shoot more in MT in the hole..

This method has worked for me on a pile of patches, from little screw holes to plugs in old motormount holes.  The medical folks that I work with also get a big kick out of all the "non lable" uses that some of the "exposed" but clean medical equipment goes to...

My condolences on the drain plug patch..  Glad you caught it before it got bad  "

Good idea on the syringe.  Another source for them is a feed supply.  I wouldn't drill them out unless you have to.  Nice boat... dog too  LOL

the marine tex I have looks real thick. Does it thin out that much when you mix it? I was going to try and do it in the morning, but I could wait till Tuesday to do it, cause I have friends at Sunstar and I can probably get that tubing and syringe from them.

Going to heat it up before hand and try to dry it as much as possible. Anything else I can do? I think the big holes go all the way through. Since this is a bit bigger, should I let it dry longer? I was going to try and use areas that haven't been drilled yet, unless you don't think that will matter with the MT in there and dried...
