Well, I officially did it. I bought a boat. Unfortunately it's not an AS, but this was a deal I couldn't pass up.

82 Mako 17 Standard with '97 Johnson 115 spl

The boat is UGLY, but solid and the transom is like a rock! PO replaced the fuel tank 2 years ago. Decks are solid with no soft spots, a bunch of dings here and there, but all in all a very solid boat. The 115 Johnson is CLEAN and popped right up on the first crank. Compression between 110-115 on all 4 cylinders. Trailer is aluminum with brand new springs, lights and tongue. And I got a very good price, well under my budget and essentially less than what the motor is worth.

The bad, the boat is waterlogged like most old Mako's but it will get me fishing this summer and I'll pull the deck and foam after the season to make her pretty.

I know it's not an AS, but hopefully y'all won't kick me off of the forum, I really like it here. :)

Everyone loves some boat porn, so here goes. I bring her home next Monday.

Great boat. I grew up on a 1971 Mako 17. As Alan Jackson said, "Ran it for years till the transom got rotten". Should skoot with a 115.  :thumleft:

That transom appears to be modified.

I'm assuming it to be so. She feels pretty heavy for a 17 and everywhere I could touch foam, it was wet :(

Ha! If you could call it that :) It's just a piece of starboard adding some additional height to the splash wall. The motor is actually a 25" shaft on a jackplate to raise it up. I plan on replacing the transom next year at a true 25" to fix it for real. Is it jury rigged? Yes, but it will work for the summer and get fixed right in the fall. :)

Congrats on the new rig!  Nothing wrong with a Mako 17.  I have one living in my garage right now.  I took the transom a little higher than 25".   :thumright:

The rod holders drain right into the foam so that is one possible source of your wet foam.  Another is the fact that there are no bulkheads separating the foamed areas from the bilge, and even the lowest part of the bilge is stuffed full of foam.

You can help offset the weight of that motor by sliding your console forward and moving the batterie(s) out of the aft well and under the console.

Good luck with her!   :)

Thanks Brian!

I've actually been following your build thread over on Classic Mako. Watching and learning in prep for next year :)

Did you decide on how you're going to mount your engine? I know there was some talk about a fiberglass bracket or an offset jack plate. Just curious to see how it turns out. I'd love to close in the transome all together and get rid of those silly little boxes in the port/starboard corners and put some more usable storage a.cross the stern.

Got the boat home this week and will begin to get her ready to splash. Lot's of little stuff to do so I'll start a project thread, but it appears the foam isn't nearly as wet as I originally thought, so that's good news! My little MDX towed her like a champ with no complaints (other than drinking A LOT of gas :) ) I was even able to get her in my garage and she fits with plenty of room to spare!

Gran398 - Sorry I missed you on this trip, but had my 83 year old father-in-law with me who suffers from dimentia so I needed to get in and out as fast as possible. I definitely want to take a raincheck on those shrimps though! I'll be down that way a bunch once I get her splash ready. We'll have to go out and wet some lines in the lil' Mako. I'd love to get some time with a local on those waters. I'll supply the beverages, fuel and fried chicken (my wife makes the BEST!).

Thanks everyone for your support and encouragement. Now I'll start picking y'all's brains on repairs & finishing
