Possible Purchase '86 200 w/ 175 Yammi - Update Got a Boat!!
« on: February 25, 2012, 12:53:31 PM »
Hey Guys,

Well my tax refund finally arrived and I'm ready to pull the trigger with cash in hand.

I found this '86 200 http://norfolk.craigslist.org/boa/2869513545.html. It has a 175 Yamaha that the owner claims to be running, but with stuck steering. I haven't talked to him yet but figured I'd reach out to the forum to see if any of you guys out in the VA Beach / Norfolk area might be able to give her the once over once I make contact with him before I make the 5hour + drive from Raleigh.

I found another interesting project as well, a 79 Wellcraft v20, but I'd really rather stay with an Aquasport if possible. Seems like now that I've got my $$, the deals have all disappeared

I also have a general question about the 200 model. Is it the same as the older 19-6? The reason I ask is that I'm limited with my tow vehicle (4500lbs capacity) and while many of you made me feel comfortable with the idea of a 19-6, I'm hoping the 200 isn't a whole lot bigger and still inside my little SUV's towing range.

Here's a pic of the boat in question...

Thanks for any help y'all can provide!!!

A lot of the models "grew" a half foot with no change in the length   A way to fill the niche I guess.  There might be a difference in a 70's 196 and an 80's 200 in weight.

Probably only slightly heavier....the hull is the same, but the Osprey cap is taller, ie more glass.

Impulse and anxiety are your biggest enemies. Put the money in the bank and keep looking. It's a buyers market and there is another deal right around the corner.  Patience is the key.

Anymore, you might as well stick the money under your mattress for as much as you're getting in interest at a bank

Check out wingtime's recent search for a new ride, well documented here. Frustrated at some point?    Absolutely.

Discouraged?   Not hardly.

He continued to shop...and found a NICE boat at a good price.

Point well taken. I actually learned that lesson years ago with an old Grady White that sunk in her slip exactly 8 hours after I splashed her. I'm definately ready to move, but going in with my eyes wide open this time :)

I'm going to run out to look at the v20 tomorrow. Hopefully I'll hear back from the guy that owns the 200 before too long, but in any case I've got a good dose of pragmatism to carry me through the decision. If either of these aren't the right one, I won't be jumping in just to get it done. Though I'll be the first to admit it's hard to wait since I've been planning this for at least a year now. :)

I'll keep y'all posted on what I find. Thanks again for the encouragement. Whatever boat I end up with, I hope to keep up on this forum. Y'all just seem to have a nice community here that I'll be thankful to be a part of!

just like im glad and saving my money for a new truck, i could have bought a "nice" f350 2 years ago, for an average price but i wouldnt have known the history on the truck. so i decided to wait to find the right truck, at a christmas party at the shop, my neighbor mentions he will be buying a new 2012 f250 in april but dont want to give his truck back to the dealer, he told me if i wanted it he'd sell it to me for what the dealer would give him for it. the truck's never towed or hauled anything ever, just used to trive back and forth to tampa everyday

There ya go Aaron! Good for you young man :thumright:

GBT, the Wellcraft V-20 has a  strong following and is a very nice boat. There is one here in town that has been recently restored, and if you decide on one PM me and I'll go take some pics. He put a 175 4S Suzuki on her.

I looked at the V20 today and was surprised by how clean it was. Cleanliness aside, it definitely has some issues.

The Good:
The engine cranked right up, but I didn't run it too long because it was running on muffs and no water was coming from the pisser. I remember my old 200's on my Grady wouldn't pee on the muffs either, but I didn't want to take a chance. Regardless, the engine was real clean, ~120 on all cylinders and ran pretty smooth. It's a 175hp Mariner, inline 6, so I imagine that boat will scoot across the sound pretty swiftly  :D

Also, the large hatches in the deck were very solid and from poking around in the bilges, the stringers and glasswork look really good for a boat of that age. No standing water and really clean as far a bilges go.

I really like the layout of this boat. It really feels much bigger than 20' because of all the cockpit space.

The Bad
The deck is shot. I guess 30+ years of owners changing seats and layouts an never sealing the holes really can do a number on a plywood core deck :) There were several areas around former chair locations that felt like I would fall through if I put my weight on it.

The transom is not healthy. It has the ubiquitous 3/16" stainless plate that was somebody's idea of a transom repair. That's not so bad, but the transom is so soft, even that thick steel place is actually starting to bow outward. That definitely needs to be fixed before she can be splashed.

The trailer has no title which means I'd either have to get a new one or play the "homemade" trailer game with NC DMV to get it on the road. Other than that it's in good shape with nice long bunks that support the boat under the stringers from the transom all the way up to where the bottom makes its upward curve.

Outcome:
I'm going to think about it. Guy says if I don't want it he'll probably just fix it up himself and keep it for a while, so there's no rush for me to make a decision. I know in my price range I'm going to be buying a bit of a project, but I was hoping to get something with the deck and transom solid enough to get me through this season. But overall, its a project I feel I could do, I'd just rather be fishing in April/May instead of doing a transom/deck project. I'll keep looking in the meanwhile  :D

Jason, since you live in Fuquay, check ILM and ENC craigslists. There are members who will go look for you.

There was an older 19-6 here a while back...I'll see if its still around if you'd be interested.

I looked at it...it was pretty decent for what they were asking.

Thanks Gran. If that 19-6 is still around, but all means let me know. After seeing the v20 up close today, I definitely know I want to stick with the 19-20' range rather than the 170 I was originally looking for. I couldn't imagine my big butt on a boat much smaller :)

You mentioned ILM and ENC craigslist. I get the ENC, but what is ILM? I've been looking at East NC, Wilmington, Outer Banks, Raleigh and Hampton Roads.

Thanks!

Thanks Gran. That one looks sweet, but I need to stick closer to $3500 , which is why I'm likely buying a project. Need to spread out the pain of pouring money in rather than in one lump sum :)

Jason, my bad...ILM is Wilmington (airport code)

I'll ck tomorrow and see if that 19-6 is still around...think it was 2K boat, motor and trailer.
