Chartplotters
« on: February 22, 2012, 11:01:28 AM »
Hey All,

Looking to replace my Hummingbird 345c depth sounder with a Chartplotter / Sonar combo.  Best one I have found is Garmin 421s.  I am on a budget as I'm 23 and just about broke at the moment since I just bought my first vessel.
Please recommend one.

Why not go with one of the 700 or 900 series Humminbirds?  Some of the 700 series use the same mount and transducer as your 300 series - you could just plug and play.  I like the Humminbird quick disconnect mount - easy to take that expensive unit off and make it less tempting for ner-do-well types.

Gonefission I like your idea, but $600 for the 700 series is quite a bit more than the 400 garmin's....

Check out a 587 - again, it will use the same mount and transducer:

Guys who like the Garmin's:  wingtime, Capt Matt, flounderpounder:

I think I'm gonna go with the 441, I have experience with this Unit and loved it.  What's the difference between "satellite enhanced worldwide basemap" and "preloaded coastal maps?"  I dont need a realistic earth view of the water and surrounding land, I need the chartplotter to place me on top of the detailed chart so I can see the contours of the ocean floor and get to my spots and slay fish.

I'm assuming I'm looking for the preloaded coastal map version, the 441s.  Thoughts?

For giggles, and because I'm not ready to spend $500 on a decent chartplotter, I bought the Navionics app for Android. Should be interesting...

I have the Navionics app. on my android phone.  Works great.  Lots of info on it.  But you are limited what you can do with it.

I have the base map in my 441.  Works fine.  The blue charts look sweet but not worth $300 more bucks.

What's the difference between the blue chart and Base map?
