170 windshield, not bad for $120.00
« on: March 21, 2006, 09:19:01 PM »
I had my new windshield locally made in a Panama shop.  It cost 120.00.  It is clear and 1/4" thick.  I tought about going to 3/8", but became afraid that the corner radii were going to touch the cosole and chickened out.  You can see the old one in the background, all frozen and with the "SMOKED" color.  I decided against that color because I rely on the shiel for rain protection, not for sunor glare.  I want to keep it as clear as possible.  Check out the picture......

Miguel, is it made of plexiglass or Lexan?  I broke mine years ago filling the gas tank. It was plexiglass. I never replaced it. I made a canvas pilot house instead. Brian

Let me try ....
When you view the picture in your gallery, at the bottom is a UBBCode line, that is what you want to copy and paste in the thread. Right click on this image, check out the properties and compare to what you posted. You don't have to use the img button if you just copy and paste the UBBCode line. Now you can go fix your trim tab thread pictures.  :D

BTW, definitely night and day difference - the smoked one must have been hard to see through.
Also saw the tabs - lookin' good.  I didn't know they had the part that sticks down, perpendicular to the tab.  Must be for steering control.  Won't be long until you're water testing her.  8)

Beware of cheap priced windshields. Windshields made by some shops that are not dedicated to the marine industry sometimes use extruded material instead of cast. It's cheaper. You can't tell the difference unless you are experienced! You might get off cheap up front, but one year down the road you will pay more when your cheap shield starts to produce spider cracks!!! A word to the wise is sufficient.

looks like they did a great job miguel, whether its lexan or plex or similar, whatever u do don't use "RAIN X" on the new windshield. I used to detail big sportfishers w/ it and the eisanglass that wraps the helm, but will spider crack that windshield to no end. Great for car windshields and eisanglass, but deadly on many other things. BTW, i like the tint in a windshield to cut the glare on late pm, or early am sun

www.updplastics.com only uses cell cast acrylic sheet. They make many Aquasport shields in 3/8" thickness, no problem! Don't need to be afraid.

UCJohn:
I´m in Panama, so bringing a upd plastics shield down here would have cost a small fortune.  I´ll try my luck at the locally made plexy one and let you know in a year.... :)

Hey ucjohn, it's like you're a spammer and I never buy anything from a spammer.  I'm surprised Captain allows you to spam the threads like you do.

Just informing people who don't understand what can happen to them due to a lack of techincal knowledge on their part. Is that a bad thing?

Smoked is okay in the daytime but kills your vision at night or in bad weather.  I'll stick to sunglasses in the daytime and a clear windshield.

ucjohn.... I resent your comment "due to lack of technical knowledge on their part".
I´m not even going to waste my time in trying to inform you what my background is.  Go sell your screens somewhere else.
