HF,
Do you have existing holes, or do you need the template?  The jackplate uses the same hole pattern as the motor.  I've got a copy of the hole pattern somewhere in one of my pb albums...

Be careful moving the engine aft too much on a 170.  You won't be the first to come off plane and find your 170 full of water and sinking.  :(

When I mounted my engine on my plate I had to bring the engine up to clear the steering.  This may be from my Hyd steering.  My thought would be to set it as low as possible.  This will allow good control in rough water and you can still raise it six inches from there with the plate.  What prop will you be running.  You might want to have your propped cupped and or switch to a four blade.  Also you NEED to get a water pressure gauge.   Without it well, you could cook the power head.

a general rule of thumb is for every inch setback, you can go up 1/4 inch... i have my motor on the 2nd lowest setting and find myself raising the plate at least an inch while underway.

Here is what my set up looks like all the way up and down.  I have no problem with ventilation in corners when the plate is down.  When all the way up the center line of the prop shaft is even with the keel of the boat.  I have no issues with water pressure this high because of the low water pickup.

I hope this helps and you enjoy the new toy.  I generally run mine up until it ventilates a little then bring it down a half inch.  That position is about two inches up on the plate depending on water conditions.

Thanks for the respond points me the right way
I've had the low water pick-ups before & know they can pick up junk kinda easy.

Low water pick ups are a double edge sword.  You really don't need it.  Just make sure you have a water pressure gauge.  I wouldn't have a low water pickup but the engine already had it.  And if it ain't broke don't fix it.
