Fuel sending unit & wiring question
« on: February 14, 2012, 12:48:22 PM »
I removed the fuel sender from my 98 245 Explorer.  It is the mechanical type that has a gauge on the top with with the "Conversion Capsule" sending unit for the dash gauge.  I was surprised to find three wires for this type unit.  There was a ground wire with a ring terminal under one of the screw holding the sender in the tank plus two other wires going to the "capsule" on top.  I like the idea of this type of gauge since it gives me a back up to the dash gauge.  Seabob,  what is the typical wiring for this type of sender?  And should I replace it with this type? (I like it) or just go to a standard sender?

Bruce,
The 2 wires coming out of the "capsule" would be a ground and the sender lead to the dash gauge.  I am assuming the additional ground creates continuity between the sender and the tank.  That is an assumption.  Snap a pic if you can...

That is what I was thinking too.  This is the style unit I'm talking about:

I'm starting to wonder if it is really worth having this style over a standard sender.  The reason is you have to buy the mechanical sender for $60 and then get the conversion capsule kit for another $50-60 bucks.

You know what I would do?  Buy a WEMA sender and be done with it.  Granted, you lose the gauge on the tank (don't always know if that's accurate as well, unless the float is mechanically attached to the gauge needle), but WEMAs are great senders.

Just what I would do...

I have the Floscan unit anyways.  So like a typical pilot I'll pretty much disregard the gauge anyways and go by my own fuel calculations.  The gauge is just a backup anyways.   I'll look into a WEMA unit.  Thanks!

Edit:  Will the Wema work with my standard dash gauge?  (If it works LOL)
