I'm looking at buying a 72 22-2 CC. It's currently powered by a 90hp Johnson. According to the hull specs, this is way underpowered... wondering if it's realistic to think I could re-power this boat on my own without spending LOTS of money on a mechanic. The boat runs fine now, but I would like to think I could bring it up to it's potential sometime in the next few years... Some questions:
- If the existing outboard is a Johnson, does that mean I need to use Johnson for the re-power if I want to use the existing controls/cable?
- can I use the existing controls/cable for a different engine?
- the hull specs call for (i think) 120-200hp engine. what might I expect to pay $/hp for a used engine?
- what length shaft do I need?
- do I have to search locally (Cape Cod/Boston area) for an engine, or are there folks out there that will ship them at reasonable cost?
I feel real comfortable with glass, wood, fuel & electronics, but the engine side is a new frontier for me... I don't have the $$ to throw at extensive mechanic hours. Am I crazy to think I can tackle this on my own?
Any thoughts on the re-power would help me develop confidence in taking this project on.
