72 22-2
« on: February 10, 2012, 09:56:37 PM »
I'm looking at buying a 72 22-2 CC.  It's currently powered by a 90hp Johnson.  According to the hull specs, this is way underpowered... wondering if it's realistic to think I could re-power this boat on my own without spending LOTS of money on a mechanic.  The boat runs fine now, but I would like to think I could bring it up to it's potential sometime in the next few years... Some questions:

- If the existing outboard is a Johnson, does that mean I need to use Johnson for the re-power if I want to use the existing controls/cable?
- can I use the existing controls/cable for a different engine?
- the hull specs call for (i think) 120-200hp engine.  what might I expect to pay $/hp for a used engine?
- what length shaft do I need?
- do I have to search locally (Cape Cod/Boston area) for an engine, or are there folks out there that will ship them at reasonable cost?

I feel real comfortable with glass, wood, fuel & electronics, but the engine side is a new frontier for me... I don't have the $$ to throw at extensive mechanic hours.  Am I crazy to think I can tackle this on my own?

Any thoughts on the re-power would help me develop confidence in taking this project on.

Good afternoon and welcome aboard!

The good news is, you can sell your Johnson with all the controls and make a decent buck. The bad news is, those controls will only work with a OMC product, without serious splicing and rewiring and new cables (most likely). I know guys have done it, but for all intents and purposes, it's just not worth it, expecially when you can pickup controls and harnesses for $200.
