Gauge questions/options
« on: February 10, 2012, 09:39:53 PM »
Currently I have an 85 Evinrude 140, with Gauges that consist of: Tach, Trim, Volt. Basically due to age and damage from a tree limb that fell in the boat, the gauges need replaced or removed. Is there any problem capping off the wires in the event of future replacement?

*Also- given that in the near future, I'd like to repower, do certain engines require gauges that are specific to that brand/model... or can you wire gauges of your choice as long as you have the correct wires going to the correct places?

Thanks very much!

There is no problem at all. Other than the fact that you won't have any gauges, and that doesn't bother you, you'll be fine.  The engine doesn't rely on the gauges, the gauges rely on the engine...

In respect to your second question, the only issues you might have with re-powering would be a tach that might have "System Check" in the face, like OMC or Suzuki, and the trim gauge.  Merc and OMC trim gauges are total opposites, and one can't be "converted" to fit the other.  But who needs a trim gauge?  Trim by feel, and if you need to SEE where the motor is, turn around!  The rest, i.e. voltmeter, fuel, water pressure, are pretty much good across the board...except for water pressure.  Some builders use 0-30 PSI, some 0-45 PSI.  An easy google search will tell you what the motor you want to repower with needs...

Awesome, thanks Bob!
I agree that unless you have an I/O the trim gauge is pretty much a waste of $.
Thanks for the heads up on the Water Pressure gauges, good to know!

I have a set of gauges in the garage that will do the trick; tach, water pressure, fuel. If you're interested you are more than welcome to them.
