Re-Pitching a Stainless Prop
« on: January 31, 2012, 10:34:37 AM »
When I went fishing with wingtime, we were discussing props and how I've been trying to raise my WOT RPMs.  He suggested getting my current (less than 1 year old) prop re-pitched. What are your guys thoughts on Re-Pitching a Powertech Stainless Prop from a 15" pitch down to a 14" pitch?   The current max RPMs are 5000 to maybe 5100 with wind at my back, light load and trimmed just right. My motor specs are for Max RPMs @ 5000-5500.

Lastly, Does anyone know of a reputable place in St.pete/Tampa area to have the work done.

Have you considered raising the motor or is the motor already as high as you get it without affecting the water intake?  For each bolt hole on the mounting bracket you go up you should get approximately 200 RPMs.

Scott has played with moving the motor up and down and I think he has it as far up as he can get it.

Scott,  I have used Admiral C&B propeller several time with good results.  They pick up and deliver to most marine stores in the area.  The last two times I dropped off my prop at American Discount Marine on 66th Street just south of 62nd Ave.

I will say, during my propping ordeal, I re-pitched my big 15.75 Yamaha prop, it did bring my RPMs up some, but overall performance was still lacking.  The issue is, when re-pitching, they can change the pitch of the blade from about 1/3 of the way up from the root, and on, but as we know, prop pitch is designed all the way from the root of the blade to the tip, and and it changes slightly as you move through the length of the blade.  Then there is cupping, and the rake of the blades... etc... Best thing I did was talk with Ken at Prop-Gods down in Miami, he sent me the Mercury Inertia prop to try, and it was such a major performance difference, I couldn't believe it, but when you compare the size of the blades to that of a powertech (which I had a new one of) the Inertia Dwarfed the powertech (same pitch and diameter props).

wing, I bought my prop from Admiral, gave me a super deal since they had this one in stock for awhile. I'll give them a call.

Blue Agave I've already raised the motor, twice, and went from a 13.25x17" prop to a 13.25"x15.  By raising the motor and switching props I went from 4200 @ WOT to currently 5000-5100rmps @ WOT.

Im happy with the overall performance/hole shot etc. I just want to bring my WOT RPMs up a bit and if its possible/advisable to change the pitch from 15" to 14" in hopes to gain 1-200 RPMs im all for it.

Scott,
Taking 1" of pitch out will probably get you where you want to  be, especially if the prop performs to your liking now, as you said for hole shots, minimum ventilation issues, and torque.

Just called Admiral and they suggested bringing it down by 2" in pitch.  Said I should get a better hole shot, remain the same at mid-range and increase my WOT by 300-400 RPMs.

Ken at Prop-Gods

We have a winner!

Ken met me at a shopping center parking lot in Bradenton to give me a thrust washer so that I could use a second-hand prop I bought off of a guy on the FS forum.  He has a great reputation in SW FL.

Maybe general propeller?  I have used them in the past.  Good service and price.
