Gauge Question
« on: January 08, 2012, 03:21:57 PM »
I just bought some new gauges for a winter project.I have a question about my tach. The tach is for Evinrude and has the alarm system built in.My original setup has a seperate alarm gauge.I have an 8 pin plug from the alarm gauge that fits into the new tach, does that pin supply power to the tach? There's no other connections for power hookup. Also I didn't replace the pressure gauge. Is that a necessary gauge or do you just have to make sure water is coming out of the pisser?

Yep Mark, 8-pin Deutsch straight into the back of the tack.  The purple and black pigtails will supply the rest of the gauges with power...

For backlighting, use a lead (should already have it, blue) from your nav lgt switch...

Thanks Seagate,I might have to get the pressure gauge.

Seabob,if the 8 pin powers the alarm gauge, what sends the signal for the RPMs from the engine?

The grey wire in the plug.  The gray pigtail is connected to that wire...

BTW, those are Faria Euro models with the chrome bezel, aren't they.  Hard to come by, usually in black or white bezels...

Yeah Bob,there suppose to be stainless steel but I don't think so.There called Farina White Euro SS gauges from great lakes.Do you reccomend the pressure gauge?I noticed on one of your jobs the gauges had an extra blue bezel underneath them,is that just cosmetic?Pretty nice.

You mean these?

You can get them from Livorsi Marine.  Probably run you around $60 for all your gauges...and in different powder-coated colors!

While I'm sitting here trying to keep warm I started to mock up a new gauge panel.I got this from SeaBob.Anyway do you think I have to many gauges for a small panel? The speedomter is a gauge that came with the set.It goes to 65mph so I really don't need it but I have it.I need to get a water pressure gauge for the empty hole. The 2 volt meters is one for my 2 house batteries and one for my deep cycle battery.

Before and After

This is just one idea.Any ideas welcomed.I also want to thank Flounderpounder(Marc) who is trying to get me a panel like his if possible.Fingers crossed.

Mark,
Virtually everyone has there speed displayed on their GPS unit these days, takes up no space and is accurate, as opposed to a pitot tube speedo.  My suggestion?  Ditch the speedo, bring the 2" gauges up in line with the tach, flush mount your Stereo or VHF below...hey, just an idea to fill up the panel, save space...

BTW, I may have some of those blue bezels laying around.  Time to get rid of stuff!

Yes, Mark, you have a 245 Osprey, I know.  Most good stereos and VHFs today meet submersability tests (not going to quote the actual test specs), the key is the sun.  The Lowrance LVR-880 I just installed comes with a cover, I've done tons of ICOMs, S-Hs, Raymarines this way.  As far as stereos, Fusion makes a sweet cover for their head unit.

Here's the electronics flat I did on a McKee Craft 24CC...

The Fusion is to starboard...

Really looks sharp.I wish my console was high like that so I could put my Raymarine C80 in the dash.

Bob makes some good points. In my opinion you don't have to many gauges,  since you have the speed gauge use it. The gauge layout you came out with looks good, if it were me I'd move the water pressure gauge up between the tach and speedo and move the trim gauge down in line with the others.  Also, you may be able to bring the gauges closer together and still may be able to do the things Bob has suggested.  Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thanks Blue,
If you look at the first pic you'll see that my panel is only 16" long by 7" wide that's recessed into the console. Here's a pic of my console.
