Transom Bait Boxes
« on: January 05, 2012, 02:57:10 PM »
Yes, they are now available. I sent my above average bait boxes to Eugene Son of Shipoke Boatworks. From these he made plugs and molds. They are cored, and feature a cleaner top to minimize potential snagging.

Eugene will tell you more about the specs, layup, gel options, aeration options etc.

Priced by calling Eugene, or PM him (Group W Bench) per forum rule. Thanks.

The first 2 sets of transom bait boxes are out of the molds. I will have Innovative Products cut a batch of clear 1/2 inch acrylic lids for them in the next week or so. These are the same material that we utilize for the leaning post/livewell units. Additionally, the transom boxes will have the same Orcas cast 316 stainless hinges as the livewells.  I will post pictures once the lids are ready and installed.

The boxes are significantly stronger than the original boxes. The new units are built with 1708 biax on all sides and the side that mounts to the transom has a 4 mil coremat core. As a slight departure from the original boxes, the tops of the new boxes have a smaller flange that hangs over the sides. This modification was made based on Gran's and Fitz's experience of having lines snag on the large overhangs of the original boxes. Additionally, the new boxes do not have the swiss cheese bottom of the old boxes, but are solid for those who intend to utilize them only for extra storage. For those wishing to plumb them, we can offer rig kits that include 2 Groco bronze clamshell pickups mated to Johnson Mayfair adjustable flow spray heads and 2 316 stainless thru hulls for discharge. Similarly, we can offer a more budget friendly option utilizing plastic pickups and thru hulls. Old school folks can go crazy with the drill bit and make a swiss cheese bottom.

Thanks to Gran for offering up his boxes as the plugs and to Fitz for setting me straight when I forgot to mark which side of the box mounts to the transom before glassing the old holes over.

The first production run of next-gen bait boxes are available for inspection at Shipoke. Mine are off white, they will gel or Awlgrip any color of your choice. The pics today looked impressive.

Here are some preliminary pictures of the boxes with clear acrylic lids. The glass lids will be done this week. I apologize for the delay, but we have been blessed with strong orders for Shipokes in 2012, and have been slow to keep up with side projects. These 3 sets are spoken for, but we can build other sets for those who are interested.

Here are some pictures of the bait boxes rigged on Chris Getting's cherry Osprey. Chris chose the clear acrylic lids. Scott should be receiving his off white set in NC on Monday with the glass lids.

They are rigged with 3/4 inch Groco clamshell pickups coupled to the adjustable flow Johnson Mayfair vertical fills. The overflow is comprised of a 1 1/8 marelon thru hull with a stainless flange. The marelon is cut off below the nut so that a livewell strainer can fit over the top.

Sorry for the links, but I keep getting the 800 pixel limit message and have given up trying to post pictures. If someone can post these pictures up directly, I would be much obliged.

Thanks Scott. I can't seem to figure out the major malfunction when it comes to posting pictures. Sometimes it works fine; others it's an exercise in mental masturbation.

Eugene, excellent work!  I like the idea of the clear lids as opposed the the glass.  Speaking of Innovative, is that the same outfit out of Kissimmee?  The ones that bought out Jim Black?  If so, do you know Tripp Hammack?

Seabob,

Innovative is out of St. Pete. The crew there, including Antibling from this board, do a great job for many custom boatbuilders in our market. Their primary work is comprised of medical equipment and trade show display work, but they do some work for the marine industry. They are by no means the most price effective, but their work is consistently top notch, and we never have to question the consistency of their products; competitors, not so much. I am always willing to pay more for consistency and quality.

Received the boxes today! Mine are the off-white set, upper right.

They are deluxe :thumright: ...very pleased with the quality, layup schedule, fit, and finish.

Pretty blue interior gel. Top-shelf stainless hardware, and aluminum trim.

Mine were ordered as storage boxes. They will never be used for bait, at least in my lifetime. Therefore, they were spec'd with solid fiberglass lids. The plus is, with the open transom twin Merc install...added buoyancy/stern lift where it is needed most. And the aluminum trim acts as a secondary rubrail for docks, pilings, etc.

Eugene, thank you sir. Tickled pink with the new boxes

I can't tell by the pictures but are the tops designed so the box can fit tighter to the transom than the original?

Thanks
