Electric Impact Gun at HF!
« on: December 30, 2011, 07:43:44 PM »
So this steering wheel nut, regardless of weeks of PB spraying, ain't gonna budge after 10 years.  So, went down to HF this morn, 1/2" drive, 230 ft-lbs of torque, regularly $60, got it on sale (unbeknownst to me, checked their site last night) for $45!  1/2" drive 15/16" socket ($3), and that nut was off in 2 seconds!

I don't have a 5HP 80gal compressor, nor do I want one.  So a 20 or 30 lb. pneumatic impact is out of the question.  And I can't take that compressor, or even a 26 gal. with me when I need it.  But this little baby?  Suuuwwweeettt!!!

When you need an impact wrench nothing else will do.  I bought a DeWalt 1/2" electric at a pawn shop for around $50 tax and all.  Grease stained and beat up but it works just fine.

Did they try to sell you the extended warranty for another $10?  They did when I bought my buffer a few weeks ago.  Makes you feel warm and fuzzy about how they fell about the quality of their products!  LOL

I love my 18V Ryobi cordless 1/4" impact driver.  I don't know how got along without that thing.

I have toyed with the idea of getting a 120V 1/2" impact driver.  I have a couple of pneumatic ones but like you said I can't haul my 60 gallon compressor around with me.

JJ, had to stop at HD on the way home, thought I would check out what 1/2"'ers they had.  1.  DeWalt.  $180.  And their impact sockets were $7 a piece.

I'm happy.  Oh, BTW, the little air body saw we all know and love?  $10 this week...

Wing, oh yeah, they always do that.  No thanks, no thanks, no thanks.  Give me my receipt, out the door.  A plus about going to our store in NPR.  Right across 19 is a bodega with a little restuerant in the back...the most killer food you would ever want!!!   :thumleft:  :thumleft:  :thumleft:

And then there was the Matco truck account

Scott, most of my hand tools are Craftsman.  I've returned one Craftsman item in probably the last 30 years, a 3/8" drive ratchet.  Sales weenyhead tried to give me a rebuild kit.  Said to weenyhead get your manager.  Manager said pick out a ratchet...

I have a bunch of Craftsman stuff too, just as good as the others without the price, i have a set of Snap On body shop hammers and the rubber casing disintegrated of all of them and they wouldn't replace them, even went all the way up the ladder and still NO yet my Craftsman 1/4 ratchet that broke, next time i'm at Sears they will replace it no problem, but then the one i have already is a replacement  from last year

Can you tell i like talking tools  :D

Scott, believe it or not, HF has these composite ratchets, 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" drive, push-botton socket release, no worries when effin up while spanning the terminals on a group 24 (ever heard of turning a ratchet into a wrench? ), real fine gears (an 1/8 of a turn gets you somewhere), and no issues in 2 years...

And if I lose one, or it drops overboard?  Oh, well, go buy another...

Actually, most Craftsman sockets and hand tools are make down the road from here in Gastonia, NC by Danaher Tool Group.

Most Snap-On are Amercian made as well.

CJ, you are absolutely correct.  So I have a solution to the Chinese, or Vietnamese, or Malaysian, or whomever goods being sold here in the States...

When the American based company decides to get their products produced offshore, then they shall be tariffed to the point where the labor cost that they saved by paying a Chinese worker (about $1.80/day) is offset by the tariff that brings the cost up to what an average American worker would be paid to produce the same product...

But corporations wouldn't have that chit, would they?  If I spun wrenches for a living, you can bet I'd own Snap-On, or Matco, and I'd spend the money.  But I don't, and we don't live extravagently...so I buy what gets the job done, at the minimal cost...

It's all about the wage disparity...

Take this with a grain of salt but a guy at Sears told me Craftsman, Kobalt, and Husky tools are made by the same company, and they do look the same but they have two plants, the Craftsmans are made here and the rest China.

As long as most consumers want the cheapest price no matter what and China is willing to put 10 year olds to work nothing will change, i just ask for a choice, i bought some shrimp today and had two choices, farm raised in Tieland or wild caught US for 2 bucks more a pound, i bought US but that was only 6 bucks more, when it comes to other things such as tools it's hard to swing sometimes since we are not all made of money but you do what you can  :salut:
