Steering Helm, Control Box and Rub Rail Replacement
« on: December 28, 2011, 01:06:35 PM »
What steering helm replacement is most widely used on a 1976 170..? Teleflex No Feedback..?

I will also need a new binnacle mount control box for a 1980 70hp Evinrude. Will the newer ones work. Which one do I need..?

Also the rub rail..?

I have the original green rub rail that could be restored but the color will not work with the new hull color.

Thanks

Go hyd. on your steering.  I use a baystar system.  Its affordable and sized right for our boats.  Search on ebay for a Taco rubrail kit.  I went with black on black.  You might be able to find a binnacle on ebay as well or at a used marine store.

i also used the black on black taco kit, price was right and it looks good, simple to install

let me know if you want any specific pics...  :thumleft:

i want to say omc uses the same cables from 79-up so the newer style should work(im not 100% on this)...

like ak said, go with hydraulic. its worth the extra cost...

I wonder if that's where the Type 479 nomenclature came from? :?

Doesn't the rub rail need to flat on the back? Do you remember which model # you used?

Thank you

I think this is what I used.  It has held up well.  The only difference is I used the black insert.

Taco Flexible Vinyl Rub Rail Kit - 1 1/4" H x 15/16" W x 50' L Black

Taco Rub Rail Flex Vinyl Kit 50 Black with White Insert V11-3447BWK50-2 flexible vinyl rub rail is easy to bend and provides a soft, cushioning effect against normal bumps from pilings and docks. Available in continuous coil for one piece instalation without seams. Tight radius bending can be made with no heating. « less

Thank you for the response. I'm assuming that the small protrusion on the back will sqeeze tight when installing. The deck to hull joint is flat.

The original steering cable measures 10'2" on the black part only. The numbers cannot be read. What lenght is normally used on a Aquasport 170..??
