175 Johnson prop question
« on: December 26, 2011, 06:14:02 PM »
I have been running a 14 1/2 X 19 OMC prop on the 94 model. I have another prop that I took off the 19-6. That hull has a 1986 150 Johnson. Right now I am running about 41 at 5000. I should get another couple of hundred RPMs and time will tell if does better or not coming out of the hole and responsiveness. The prop off the 150 is a 15 X 17. This afternoon I pulled the 19 pitch off and tried to put the 17 on. The 17 will go on but not far enough. It does engage the splines correctly but its lacking about a half an inch of sliding all the way down. The 17 pitch has a little rust about 1/3 of the way in but it doesn't act like its catching on the rust it just suddenly hits a point, hard. I have soaked it with PB blaster and will try to get a scotchbrite and see if some of it will come off then try again. Any suggestions?

Lew, check to make sure the thrust washer didn't stay inside the one your trying to install, hence you could have 2 thrust washers behind the hub, that would prevent the prop from seating all the way back

I'll carry that motion about the thrust washer!  Marc is right sounds like you have two on there.

check the differences between the 2 shafts, i want to say the pre-89 use a slightly different shaft, i think the splines dont go as far down the shaft... also, make sure the correct washer is used, my omc/brp renegade prop uses the same washer as the merc props, but my older omc prop uses a larger/thicker washer, about 1/2" thicker...

OK I admit it ! Yall were right! Its still on there and I haven't gotten the sucker out yet. It looks to be a little bit different shape than the one on the 94 motor. It doesn't look like it has a taper to go onto the shaft. I have PB'd it and it hasn't done any good. I even tried the map torch and still nothing. Any more ideas?

Its kind of obvious that its still on there once I cleaned it up a little. It was so nasty you couldn't see it in there.

Lewis,

If you keep torching it, it will ruin the rubber hub and you may have to rehub it. Are you sure you aren't just looking at the back of the prop casting? I don't understand the lack of taper to seat the prop on the propshaft? Although you can usually see the rubber hub with the thrust washer removed. Go on line and see if the OMC (BRP) part numbers interchange between model years. Also measure the diameter of the prop hub at the base and see if they are the same diameter. For some reason, I think your gearcase diameter is smaller than the old V6 150.

Fitz may be right - I think JohnnyRude changed the lower unit in 1991 or 1992, and props may not be compatible.

Check out one of the prop selector sites like Overtons or Michigan Wheel and see if the same number is given for the same prop and specs for both engines.

i believe it was 1989, my 1990 runs the same prop and hubs as the newer outboards...
