24 ft aqua center console, need some info
« on: December 16, 2011, 06:03:12 PM »
I am considering going to look at a 24 center console, lines look like 22-2mid 70s. Ive never seen one so I dont know much about them. Its a bit of a drive for me so I was hoping someone could give me a crash course on that model. Are their issues different from the older 22-2s. Anyone comment on their ride quality or quirks?

Sounds like a 240. Look in the photo gallery there are a good many pics in there. Do you know what year it is?

I have a 240 center console and highly recommend it.  I think for the most part, it's just a bigger version of the 222.  I love the ride and stability of it.  It drafts slightly more than a 222, but offers more stability when heading offshore.  It can beat you up a little if the seas get rough because of the shallow deadrise.  With that said, because of the shallow deadrise, you can still get into skinny water like a 222.  Perfect boat for someone who wants the best of both worlds.  Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there are any unique issues with the 240 that are different from a 222.  I think mine is built very similiar to the 222.  I am not an expert by any means though.  Overall, I think if you want the extra room and more stability offshore then it is defintely worth looking at.  Then again, I don't know how far of a trip we are talking about here.  Does it appear to be a project boat or can you enjoy it for a while without working on it?  A year, price and any other description of the boat would give these guys on here something to go by so they can give you some good advice.  Good luck, hopefully it works out for you.

There are some styling cues that make me think this is a 22-2 and not a 240. I could be wrong and more pictures would help. The top cap doesn't look like a 240

Call and ask what the HIN is.  This could be an early 22-2, but hard to tell from the pics.   You can find out the year from the HIN, but it's not a deep-V hull for sure.

The 240 was more than a stretched 22-2 and if you look in the AS archives you will notice that they had a pronounced top cap "apron" that was about 4" high and quite noticable plus a higher gunwhale height. Most were side console; we do have a couple of members with CC versions, with a forward cuddy and this one isn't a 246. The 240's also had unique stepped transom that we can't see in the photos. Not that a 22-2 was a bad thing by any means but there is difference in ride quality between 12 degree and I believe it was a 14 degree on the 240. The 240 was a meatier offshore boat than the 22-2. I've had many Atlantic offshore trips in the 22-2 including a Daytona to Walkers Cay trip with a pair of 65 Evinrudes in the mid 70's and never had any apprehensive momments. Like anything else, pick your days and stay out of the beer cooler and you can do some amazing things in one of these old boats.
