got the flywheel off this morning,

let it sit over night under tension, tightened it some more this morning, tapped with the hammer, popped right off, picking up the new flywheel tomorrow night...

as i suspected, the stator didnt sustain and damage...

Aaron,

One thing you may be tempted to do but do not do is to put grease on the crankshaft or flywheel taper surfaces in order to keep from this happening again. DO NOT DO IT! I learned this a long time ago working with tapered tooling in the machine shop. It causes an hydraulic effect between the surfaces and when you torque it down the tapered surfaces will not mate together correctly and eventually will loosen and possibly damage the crankshaft, keyway, flywheel or you could have the flywheel come off while running. When I was an apprentice toolmaker I made the mistake of lubricating a tapered seat lathe chuck to keep it from sticking when changing chucks. The 20# chuck came off at about 1500 rpm just missing my head and destroying a $900 chuck when it it the floor. I was lucky I didn't get killed. But worse was the remaining 3 years of my apprenticeship listening to the heckling from the journeymen everytime I approached one of the lathes to turn up a piece of steel. Just clean the surfaces up and torque it down.
