flywheel removal/ broken magnets
« on: December 06, 2011, 01:22:53 PM »
today's whoopin my ass, trying to pull the flywheel...

removed the 1-7/16 nut no problem with my fancy new impact wrench... put my puller on, started cranking... snap! bolt broke off(after soaking with PB)... attempt at drilling the bolt to use an easy out, hole drills out no problem, thread the easy-out in. start turning... snap!tip of the easy out breaks off...

so now im sittin here pissed... next is to completely drill out the hole and re tap it...which i dont want to do... wish the flywheel was steel then id just weld the fking puller to it! lol

Hey young Asswaffer,
Your're a Ford guy; you what patience is all about!
I assume you are talking about one on the 5/16 bolts that screw into the flywheel casting to to pop the flywheel using the the puller. Go to the shop and find the largest bearing puller that will grab around the outer parameter of the flywheel rim and grab her there or fashion some cables or metal around the flywheel to adapt the puller jaws. Next, tighten the puller nut good and tight and let it sit. Tomorrow tighten it a little bit more, next day a little more and so on. I've had flywheels take 6 days to pop. It's probably never been off before so take your time. You can try a little propane heat  around the hub during the process to help with things but remember not to get crazy and melt the stator are upper crank seal. just heat and tighten and walk away. It will come off! NO Hammering!!!

OH no broken off tap tip can be a big problem...  the problem is it's harder than just about any drill bit out there...   I don't know squat about rude flywheels Fitz but is there a risk of warping it with a big gear puller?    Also what grade bolt were you using?  Fitz is right about the trick of tightening the puller an letting it sit...  I've had to use that method before on Jeep axle flanges.  One tip... leave the nut on the shaft.... that way if it pops while your away it doesn't shoot to the moon on ya!

ill get a puller from the shop in the morning, the bolt was suposedly a grade 8... but the puller kit says made in china so theres my first problem... the bold seemd bent when threading it in i did use it before, something on my f150...

one ov my customers gave me 2 new magnets he had left over from his 225's, he also gave me a new in box powerpack and a couple coils. and a retaining clip kit for the magnets

well i was able to slide all of the magnets out though... one magnet is re-useable, the rest are well you can see... looking though the vent holes on the flywheel, the stator lookd ok, appears to have no damage, but ill know when im able to pull the flywheel...

Don't mean to say something obvious here, but what kind of puller are you using?  Is it a wheel puller or a flywheel puller?  The wrong puller will cause the flywheel to actually sieze up on the crankshaft.  Sometimes you need to put some good pressure on the flywheel, give it a spray of liquid wrench or other penetrating oil, and let it sit a while.  Come back, give it a few hammer taps, and see what happens.  Keep the pressure on and give it time to break loose.

Get a bigger hammer.  Seriously.
I have been called to assist on a couple of 225 Johnson flywheel removals.  All it took was to get the big center bolt on a jaw type puller good and tight, then whack it one good time with a BFH.

A BFH whack on the puller center bolt is the norm for using a puller but be careful with how big of a BFH you use on this.  Keep in mind your whacking on the crankshaft which in turn is whacking on the bearings!

X2.  Right now I have been spraying the living chit out of a steering shaft nut to pull a wheel and replace with new.  Hasn't budged in 2 days, then I have to deal with getting the wheel off once the nut DOES budge...

i would have picked it up tonight but a friend/ex-girlfriend wanted to come over after work and show me/my parents her newborn... now my parents wont stop giving me hell for not having a kid yet   lol
