Any advice on powering a 1977 A/S 222 center console. Is  a 150 hp enough ? max speed? would a 200 or 225 hp be better ? max speed ?Is a 4 stroke 200 or so too heavy ?  Transome is orginal at this point, with 3inch cut out, therefore what shaft lenght.
All help is appreciated. Frank

I have a 1982 22.2 CCP with its original 200 hp mariner.  I am still getting full power and it is just about right in terms of hp.  I think 150 would be a bit light but it depends on what you will be doing with the boat.  On the other hand, I have a couple of friends who have similar boats with a 225 and frankly it seems like overkill to me, both in terms of power and in terms of extra weight at the stern.  If you want to repower with a 4-stroke, I would consider how the boat rides now and think about what the extra weight in the stern is going to do.  If you have trim tabs, you can probably compensate with no problems. If not, you may need to think about it - at least in terms of how you store things in the boat, including where you put passengers.  There are lots of other threads on this. Just do a search.

I think 150 would be enough.  You could probably hit 40+ mph with it.  I have the 19-6 version with a 150 and will probably go smaller and lighter when I repower.  Original transom means 20 inch shaft I think.

What I would do is, close the transom and put your new outboard on a portabracket/jack plate.

I have a '79 22-2 with a 225 Johnson.  I'm no speed freak but I think something in the 200/225 is just right with 4 grown men, tackle, coolers, etc.  Of course my tower is a lot of wind resistance which holds top speed down.  Like said above, it depends on how you use the boat.  If it's just going to be a family cruiser for puttering around the bay a 150 would probably be fine.  My motor is kinda tired with only 90psi compression now and top end with a light load is 40 mph at 5900 rpm.

I have a 222 CCP with a 200HP Mercury 2.4 litre V-6 Black Max.  With a 19 pitch SS Quicksilver Power II prop, I get 40 MPH GPS top end at 5300 RPM, and can get out of the hole with no problem with 5 adults on board, 80 gals of gas, and the baitwell full.  This is a pretty well-matched setup, and I think a 150 would be lacking in this situation.

However, if'n I had my druthers, I would go for a new or recent 3.0 litre Mercury EFI or Yamaha EFI - in 200, 225, or 250.  The is just no substitute for cubic inches!    The 3 litre Mercury 200 just has a lot more guts than the 2.4 or 2.5 litre.  A friend of mine just upgraded from a motor like mine to a 3 litre (same horsepower rating) and was surprised at the difference.  The EFI version also uses a lot less gas than the carb versions of the 2.4 and 2.5, and I just don't think we are going to see $1/gal gas prices again anytime soon...

i've gone in great detail about my repower of my 222. Went w/ a 250hp ox66 leftover new for more than anything the weight, about 470 lbs. 200-250hp hpdi in the 550-570lb range, and any 4 stroke definately in the 570lb range. Probrably overkill w/ 250 for my boat, but i like the extra power, and you also HAVE to consider(a point bought up by my mechanic), how hard the motor has to work to get to plane, and cruising speed. I grew up riding 2 stroke dirt bikes and 2 strokes need to be wound out to wot sometimes, but consistent higher rpms to me =shorter engine life. When you consider what kind of rpms you need to plane, cruise etc. my mechanic says that the extra work needed to push on a smaller outboard also negates fuel savings. Regardless of the distance traveled, i would imagine fuel consumption would be almost identical for 2 of the same boats, 150hp cruising at 37-3800 rpms, and a 250 hp cruising at 3000 rpms. Not to mention RESALE! NOONE wants to buy an underpowered boat, keep an eye on used boat sites. The weight was such an issue because my boat sits so low to begin w/ BTW, my boat does 51mph wot, w/ the wrong prop, the right one would push me 55-56 mph, a little overkill but nice.

I push my 87 222 with a 1999 Suzuki 225 2 stroke. WOT gives me 41 mph. I feel 200 hp to 225 hp is just right!

Probably not the most logical decesion I have ever made, but, my local dealer traded in a 99 Yam 150 h.p. salt water series II (ox66 fuel inj.) very very nice clean motor, less than 200 hrs. I agree a 200 h.p. would be better, we only fish inshore. The rest of the story is I'm getting married April 1 (fool) and we plan to fish the whole first week of April, needed power now.
The next question is what prop ?
Thanks for all the help and advise.
