Just started on a 1974 22-2 and have some questions
« on: November 10, 2011, 09:21:24 PM »
First off, i think this site is great and glad to have it as a resource.  I bought a '74 22-2 in the summer and just now getting around to work on it.  I'm using two guys that previously worked at a boat company in the past to do the work, but they have never worked on a AS.  They posses the ability to do any of the work needed, but require a little direction on what to do with the small "tweaks" and changes most people do on the 22-2's.  I have been on several re-built as's and all were rebuilt a little differently.  When finished, I want to have a 1/2 or 3/4 tower, and no less than a 200 hp.  Preferably four stroke.  I have a small list of things that I plan on doing to the boat but was hoping to get some input from the forum as well.
List:
- building a full transom.  (penske or coosa board sandwiched with three layers of glass on each side)
-tearing foam out of stringers (wet foam) and re-foaming them, or ripping everything up and building new stringers and bulk heads? - input please!
-i want to raise the deck.  I have read the boat collects water in the back with two or more people.  If I do raise the deck, how high?  Is 2"s good enough to solve the problem?
-Which scupper set up is better?  Drains in the corners or cut straight into the bottom of the transom?
-Plan on building new deck with penske or coosa boat. - input please!
-Having a porta bracket - 21" set back
- I REALLY don't want less than a 200 hp.  Is putting that heavy of an engine really going to screw up the ride and throw the weight off? I plan on moving as much foward as possible when rebuilding.  With the tower, I'd like to have that additional power.
-How far forward in inches should the console and fuel tank be set?

Sorry for all the questions.  I'm sure i'll have more.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'll post some pictures soon.

thanks

midflor,

Welcome aboard!

There are many terrific rebuilds of closed transom 22-2's here on the board.

Look no further than our master rebuilder and expert tarpon guide, Captain Matt.

Review his rebuild posts to get a handle on what you will be dealing with.

Am sure your guys will get a good job. If needed, we have sourcing for professional rebuilders who guarantee their work, on time, at a fair and reasonable price. Welcome!  :salut:

Lots of good info. here on the site that will help you with your project. You should have no problem with a 200hp, although the 4-strokes are considerable heavier than the 2-strokes. I have 200hp 2-stroke on the back of my '75 19'6. How about some pics?  The links you posted do not seem to work. There are a few threads about how to post photos. Good luck with the build.

Also, in what part of Florida are you located?

Welcome Midflor!

I just started a rebuild on my '76 22-2 and had a lot of the same issues discussed on the thread I started. It is great for me to have someone rebuilding a twin of my boat at about the same time I'm doing mine. It will be fun to compare notes as we go along!

My thread is here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7735

I found with many questions, you just have to wait until you get it torn apart and see what's what. So far on mine it looks like I'll be able to keep the original stringers, for instance. Which will save me some trouble. I'm going to do the deck and transom in Coosa board and try to be wood free below the deck.

On the question of power, I chose a Suzuki DF175 on a Porta Bracket. I think the extra weight of the 200 - 250 HP V6's offsets the extra HP and causes balance problems. For instance, the Suzuki website has a chart for a DF175 on the back of a 23' Dusky, and another for a Mako 23 with a DF250. The boats measure in at exactly the same weight, and within an inches on length and beam. The only difference in the two charts is gallons per hour. Food for thought :)

I would leave the deck height as is. The freeboard on these boats is already fairly low, about knee height (which i like). Now, if you raise the deck too much you will be leaning on the gunwales with your shins when fighting a fish (which I DONT like).  Just ad some ball scuppers and the problem of water on the deck is solved.

O yea, we need some pics :geek:

thanks everyone for the input.  I appreciate the help.  Nec Evil, sounds like we're not too far off.  I'll keep an eye on your thread.

finally sat down long enough to read how to post pictures.  below are a couple other shots that i took.  Nothing too detailed right now but i will have some more loaded by tomorrow.  I have everything out of the deck and saw that the stringers are coming apart and have wet foam in several areas.  I will get to that after we have finished repairing and reinforcing the cap, liner and transom etc.  Whoever attempted to put a full transom on before didn't do a good job and basically gave up in the middle of working on it.  They attempted to do the job with wood, which i am taking out and replacing with penske.  This past week, we worked on the cap, liner, fwd casting deck, hatches, and rim around the hull, basically filling in all the screw holes and vent holes with a 3m faring putty, along with adding a layer of 50 inch 1.5 oz mat and 50 inch 3610 to the underside of the cap.  When I received the boat, the tip of the cap was busted off but i was able to salvage the small part from inside of the hull.  Guess that's where is fell when it snapped off.  We've reattached that and just finished sanding it this afternoon.  Smooth and read for paint or gel.  What i plan on working on next week is fixing up the inside panels, adding a layer of divineycell or nida core glassed to the bottom of the fwd casting deck for additional support, and getting together all the supplies for the transom.  Looking forward to getting started on that and the stringers!

midflo,

Congrats, good job!

If I may make a suggestion...Place the cap upside down on the sawhorses, with the middle set of sawhorses higher than the fore and aft sawhorses. This way, you maintain the correct cap curvature in relation to the hull.

In order to be exact, run a string on the hull top fore to aft on both the port and starboard sides. At the midships point, measure down to the hull top...this will give you the correct curvature measurement/negative deflection.

This measurement will transfer to the middle set of sawhorses. Hope this all  makes sense...we dealt with this same issue recently. Needs to fit...the cap won't fit correctly if glassed-up when lying flat.

As stated...we missed this thought

Best wishes on your rebuild!

Gran, thanks for the tip.  we set the cap upside down on the saw horses yesterday.  I'm starting to think about what I need to do to the hull when assembling everything back together and it occurred to me that some boats have a tendency to sag to the side when resting on a cradle or trailer.  Out side of setting the cap on top of the hull, is there any way I can find out what the measurements are from side to side of the hull, at different points from transom to bow, should be?  Does anyone have that info or is it easiest to just use the cap?  I want everything to be in place when we start to work on the stringers.

You got it, I would temporarily reset the cap, but will defer to the guys who have actually completed one, we're not there yet
