1983 222 FF
« on: October 31, 2011, 09:16:10 AM »
I just bought a 1983 Family Fisherman 222 boat and I need to repower. Im thinking on a twin 115hp or 150hp. Which one do you think i should use?

Thanks in advance,

if you're not heading too far offshore, or doing a lot of solo trips where there's no hope of contacting a tow boat service, etc., I'd stick with a good reliable single engine - half the rigging, better fuel burn, less weight back there, & probably some more benefits.
But long trips across open water & you might feel safer with twins.

I have twin 115's on my '73 22-2 and really like them. It is a misconception about fuel economy. Since I have a flow scan and GPS and can give you some accurate information. They burn pretty much what a single engine of their combined horsepower would. Even using the standard rule of thumb for 2 stroke outboards of 10% of their horsepower in gallons per hour at full throttle. Each of of mine really will burn 11.5-12 gallons per hour for each engine or 23-24 gallons an hour in total. That happens to be the same fuel burn for a 225 HP single at full throttle. One of my engines was acting up on our way to ST.Augustine with an ignition issue. So I tilted the port engine up and ran home on the starboard for 35 miles. With 4 people 55 gallons of fuel, she ran 30.7 mph @4800 rpm @full throttle; I just wanted to see what she would do! I pulled the throttle back to 3750 rpm and she ran 23 mph. This is with a 4 blade 18 pitch propeller and 8.8 gph. I was amazed how well she ran on a single. So if your running offshore go with the twins. There are alot of benefits to running them and the maintenance is a small price for the added reliability. Just make sure you buy engines big enough that you can get the boat on plane and cruise with one engine without having to worry about overloading the single engine. A 22-2 FF with twin 115's should work very well as mine does.

I have a 79 222 FF, owned it since 1990. I run a 200 2 stroke Yami also have a 4 stroke high thrust Yami 9.9 kicker. 200 weighs roughly 475 lbs. Kicker is around 110 lbs. So roughly around 600 lbs. total. On my boat I wouldn't want anymore weight on the stern. I moved batterys forward to off set some weight in the back. My hull handles this setup very well but would be afraid of adding any more weight to the stern. If your scubbers are located on the side like mine I would be afraid of them being under water with twin outboards. My kicker has got me back to port more than once. Kicker will push boat about 8mph at full throttle.
Also what kind of condition is your transom.
Just my 2 cents

The transom is solid and currently have a 2000 Yami 250 but it need repairs. Thats why Im thinking of twins this will be use for mostly for fishing also ride with family (two young childs). As a peace of mind I would like the twins but a single with a kicker can be another option.

Thanks,

I have a '79 222FFV with a 140 tohatsu and 13.5x 15 prop and a 9.9 merc kicker. It works great, but I would like more power.

I fish solo mostly and when I stand in the back of the boat water comes up the drains. I would be a little leary of adding the weight of two main engines back there.

If I were you, I would repair the yami and add a kicker, maybe even a used kicker. That motor you have will last a long time with the right maintenance and adding the kicker will give you the piece of mind.

You have to consider the hull and if it is worth the investment of 2 new motors as well.

I have thought about it and go back and forth. Is this the hull I want for the next 10-15 years? If not what would the resale be with the new motors? Could I coup that money back or would it be difficult to sell a 30 year old boat with new motors? Would I be better off buying a newer hull with the motor I want already installed?

You're doing the right thing asking questions. Just make sure you ask the right questions.

Oh and were are the pictures?

You have to join the FF registry too!

We are now a party of five I think...maybe six.

BondoBill has a nice setup too. You should look at his for some ideas if you plan on keeping her for a while.

I'm with Fitz, I'm a twins fan.

I've owned twin 130 Yammies, great running rig, especially nice at the dock. Makes you look like a pro when manuevering.

A friend had an 80's model Aquasport 250CCP with twin 115 Yammies. It was plenty of HP for that ride. And for offshore reliabilty....there is no substitute.
