engine size for aquasport 205 osprey
« on: October 24, 2011, 12:03:28 PM »
Hi All,

I have a 205 Osprey which is currently a bit underpowered, having a 115 Suzuki 4-stroke.  The boat is rated for a 115-225 hp.
I'm just selling the 115, and was planning on going to a new 175 Suzuki 4 stroke- it is only about 60lbs heavier.

I know a guy who has a used 250 hp 4 stroke Suzuki for sale, and I'm wondering if that would be ok or too much engine (too heavy) for the boat.

Any advice would be useful.

thanks,
Tom

Personally, I'm thinking too much motor (the 250 HP) for that boat, the 175 sounds like a good fit.

totusporcus,
Damn, that's an interesting handle!  Anyway, the Zuke 225/250 4 strokes are the same motor, just tuned differently.  Sooo, if the 205 was rated for a 225 4 STROKE, and not just a 225 2 stroke, then weight wise, you're good to go...

Bob has a need for speed

I demo'd a 200 Osprey with a 150 V6 Johnson.

That boat would run in the low 50's...but from 45 to 52...it was WEIRD.

Once you get past the designed hull speed things can get scary quick.

Ahh, the infamous "hull speed".  There are those who don't believe in it...I do.  A hull is only capable of a certain, controllable, speed, before hydrodynamic forces caused by velocity not designed into the hull form cause the hull to behave in an unpredictable manner...

That being said, if the 205 was rated for 225HP, then one would certainly hope that it was tested in a few conditions (notice, I didn't say all conditions) to verify that WOT would not put the operator in danger running 225HP.  250 is not that much different...

And, yes, I do have the "need for speed".  But I ain't no dummy...

No buddy, you ain't no dummy. Never have been, or will be.

The boat I tested was squirrelly at speed with a 150.

The 205...why such a high max HP rating?

The 205 started it's life while I was still at WC/AS.  Bill Vanick, formerly of Chris Craft, was Engineering Manager then, after Todd's departure.  I would assume the boat was tested in varying sea conditions to ensure safety at all speeds with the 225...

BTW, based on that, I have a special this week on bridges and swampland...

Suzuki has some good rebates going between now and December 15, and I think they have lowered prices across the board. I bought a DF175 from Diamond Suzuki in New Smyrna Beach for $14,400 installed, after $1,000 rebate. About a $3k savings over a few months ago.

I'm putting the 175 on my 22-2. I'm all about balance, and I think the big, torquey 4 cylinder and my 22-2 are going to be a good fit. Put anbody's 6 cylinder on there and it is going to add 70 + lbs, 2 gallons per hour, and probably zero top end. Just my $.02...

Good luck!
