for about 3 seconds. Nah, I ain't man enough to eat a possum.
I had plenty of opportunities but let him go on about his business, just like I do the gray fox and other critters that cross the yard. Then he started coming on the back porch. I was afraid my old dog would tie up with him so I sent him to a better place. ;)

Looks like it could be "playin' possum"
They love to play dead...but this one...looks like he ain't playin'.
Possum brain...never had it. Considered a delicacy among certain groups. Possum brain is a known purveyor of all types of malady.
I'd love a spat of it...pan-fried. Can't be any different than fresh liver puddin'.

Our Dalmatian mix gets a hold of one in our back yard now and then. They play possum and she leaves them alone.. sometimes they lay there for almost and hour after that happens. They don't play possum by choice. It is an involuntary reaction to a threat due to the release of a type of endorphin that sort of paralyzes them. A similar process happens in the famous fainting goats. There is a theory here that this response is why you see so many of them as roadkill. They are frightened by a car, faint.. then squish! BTW they are actually very clean animals and they groom themselves not unlike a cat. They just look nasty LOL

Reminds me of last night, had to chase off a raccoon and a possum off my porch about an hour apart, i had been wondering why the cat was eating so much.

They're cute when they hiss.
I had a wife that hissed.
Not really cute, but gets your attention.
Then those endorphins that wingtime referred to release...and you get kinda paralyzed.
