Water in gas tank. Please help

I would like to take the probe out of the tank and take a peek in there. my question is: Do I loosen the 1 1/4 nut at the base of the tank or the 3/4 fitting that is above the nut? I am thinking that I hold the 1 1/4 nut with wrench and unscrew fitting above. I just want to make sure so I don't make a expensive mistake...

You might have better luck taking the fuel level sender out - it's a bigger hole and you can see more.  You can also inspect the sender and see the condition of the float, etc.  Also, the smaller screws are less likely to be corroded in place that the pipe fittings.  Just my $0.02...

Cap'n John, you are so right. Thats what I ended up doing. I was hoping to remove the probe but it was not worth the possibility of damaging the plastic gas tank.
That said, I have about 55 gallons of gas to deal with. I wish it had a low point drain like airplanes. Since water settles to the bottom, I will try to siphon it out.

Fill up some water barrels on your transum the bow will go up rear end of tank will be the low point.Hope this helps.
