Live well , bait wel
« on: September 30, 2011, 06:43:20 AM »
I live in NY and need to winterized my 17' aqua sport. It has a live bait well as well as a live well.  How do I drain for winter? Is it necessary to put in pink fluid?  How do I make sure or even get water out of system
Thanks
John

First, welcome aboard John!

Second, what is the year of your hull?

Third, a shopvac would probably help. Vacuum from inside the well, then from the outside. If you don't think this is working, remove the pump and with a airhose and blow nozzle blow out any remaining water from the lines. Let us know if this works and of course this post is worthless without pics!

I think winterizing is when you find that windbreaker you have and reduce your boats ice budget slightly.

Winterizing a livewell down here means switching from shiners and pinfish to live shrimp.
Glad we don't have to deal with that.

You guys are funny...unfortunately, some of our members have to perform this time honored tradition...

J Mac, plug your drains, fill with an inch or 2 of Non-Toxic (the pink stuff) antifreeze.  Guess you can mix it 50-50.  Then disconnect the hoses at the pumps, you don't want water freezing in the pumps.  Then...move to Florida!!!

Used to love winterizing IBs... :x

John,

Welcome to the site, and pay no attention to these southern folk that do not suffer our pain of winterizing....

For the wells how are they filled. In there's a raw water pump there should be a union at the sea strainer. Hit the local boat store and buy the union, make sure its the one for a hose attachment. Buy about 6 feet of hose and clamp it on.  Put the hose on the pump at the intake and the loose end in a gallon of the pink anti-freeze. Turn the pump on and let it run until the antifreeze flows out steady.

For the wells, put a half gallon in each and either pump  it out or drain. This will ensure all the water is out and and the anti freeze is in. I also throw a gallon in each well for the winter.

Another good tip is to pick up some CRC marine electronics grease and coat all of you connections, fuses, and the ground bar.

My girlfriend just asked me if it is making your boat dolphin proof?   (We just came home from seeing the movie which I supplied some equipment for)

It's touch to pick your days when there's a 5 mile sheet of ice between you and open water. You know ice right, the little cubes you drop in your cocktails to keep them cool... :P  :P  :P

As I live in the frozen north as well  winter layup is also a necessary evil . If you are so inclined there is hard water fishing then mother nature can supply the drink cooler and automatic fish cooler ! You just need an atv for transport !
The Aquasports make good big lake boats !
